Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Effe 55, 100% Sangiovese, is full of character. It also clearly needs time to come together. White pepper, chalk, dried flowers, mint and intense red fruit open with some coaxing. I very much like the energy here. Readers should expect a somewhat tense, austere Gran Selezione with quite a bit of potential.

At the eastern limit of Castellina, bordering Radda, Capraia’s two-hectare Casanuova di Pietrafitta vineyard climbs to 550 metres. Facing northeast, the low yielding 50-year-old vines bear approximately one kilogram per plant. Delicate scents of white blossom are flecked with black pepper and flint. This is linear and relatively slim in build yet offers worthy depth of red cherry and currants tangled with crushed herbs. Crisp acidity propels a stony mineral sensation, and fine, chalky tannins assert their grip. Perhaps just a touch dry.

On the nose, tart black cherries and blood orange sparkle above a savory, earthy foundation of balsamic, damp soil and fresh coffee. The palate runs with the fruit flavors, but a persistent coffee note flows smoothly into a dark chocolate finish. Acid splashes against taut tannins.

Winery Notes

This wine displays an intense aroma of red berries, even cherries under spirit, over notes of cocoa beans and well-integrated hints of oak. On the palace it is warm and powerful, and the cannic structure adds drinkability and elegance to the wine. At the same time, itsacidity and minerality grant for a long and refreshing finish. In order to preserve the natural features of this wine, only natural methods have been used for stabilization, and it has only been slightly filtered. Therefore, especially after a long ageing, a natural deposit might appear on the bottom of the bottle, which does not affect the quality of the wine.
