The pure Cariñena 2013 Dits del Terra is sourced from an ancient slope vineyard on slate soils in Torroja and aged in oak foudres for 18 months after a short, spontaneous fermentation. This cool vintage has produced an aromatic and fresh Dits, with tantalizing aromas of blood orange, with citric-like notes, getting close to the character of the Arbossar. It’s perhaps the vintage, but this wine seems to have changed, for the best, it feels more perfumed, beautiful and all of a sudden you forget that the grape is supposed to be rustic. The palate has very fine tannins and great balance, a velvety texture but with grip. This is a fantastic Dits. There are 4,600 bottles produced.

Carignan

Carignan is an ancient blue-skinned grape varietal, thought to be indigenous to the Aragon region of Spain. However, today it is most commonly associated with the fine wines of southern France, and has been grown in many countries around the world which have the warm and dry conditions it requires to thrive. Carignan is recognized as being quite a sensitive vine, highly susceptible to all kinds of rot and mildew, although producing excellent results when given the right conditions and handled correctly. Its high tannin levels and acidity make the Carignan grapes very astringent, and as such, they are often used as a blending grape to give body to other, lesser bodied varietals. Despite this, with careful treatment, Carignan can produce superb single varietal wines packed full of character and unique attributes.

The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast. This variation in terroir results in a fantastic range of grape varietals being grown, and a wide range of wine styles are produced within Catalunya.

Brilliant red. Heady, mineral-accented black raspberry and cherry scents are complicated by Asian spices and lavender. Palate-staining, intense red and dark berry and floral pastille flavors deliver a compelling blend of power and vivacity. Finishes spicy, vibrant and very long, with fine-grained tannins adding gentle grip before fading into the wine's juicy fruit. Whole-cluster fermented and aged in a 3,500-liter wooden foudre for two years. (Vinous)

Winery Notes

Dits del Terra gets its name from the gnarled, nearly 85-year-old vines of Carinyena that look like ancient fingers clawing into the schist soils of this site near the village of Torroja. This is one of the first vineyards that Dominik and his then partner, Eben Sadie, acquired when they started making wine together in the Priorat. Being south-facing, it is also fascinating to taste it alongside L’Arbossar, its nearby, north-facing twin.
