Zweigelt is an Austrian red grape variety created in 1922 by crossing Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent. It has since become one of Austria's most widely planted red grapes, known for producing approachable yet characterful wines. Zweigelt wines typically exhibit bright red fruit flavors such as cherry and raspberry, often complemented by hints of spice and a touch of pepper. They are medium-bodied with moderate tannins and refreshing acidity, making them versatile and food-friendly. What makes Zweigelt unique is its ability to combine the fruity characteristics of its parent grapes with a distinctive spiciness, akin to white pepper or cinnamon. It is also valued for its adaptability to different terroirs within Austria, expressing variations in soil and climate through its wines.
