Grenache

The purple skinned grapes of the Grenache varietal have quickly become one of the most widely planted red wine grapes in the world, flourishing in several countries which have the correct conditions in which they can grow to ripeness. They thrive anywhere with a dry, hot climate, such as that found in central Spain and other such arid areas, and produce delightfully light bodied wines full of spicy flavors and notes of dark berries. Their robustness and relative vigor has led them being a favorite grape varietal for wineries all over the world, and whilst it isn't uncommon to see bottles made from this varietal alone, they are also regularly used as a blending grape due to their high sugar content and ability to produce wines containing a relatively high level of alcohol.

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

Washington State

Since it began in the 1820s, wine-production in Washington state has gone from strength to strength, with many of the finest United States wines coming out over the past twenty years hailing from this region. Today, the state is the second largest US producer of wines, behind California, with over forty thousand acres under vine. The state itself is split into two distinct wine regions, separated by the Cascade Range, which casts an important rain shadow over much of the area. As such, the vast majority of vines are grown and cultivated in the dry, arid desert-like area in the eastern half of the state, with the western half producing less than one percent of the state's wines where it is considerably wetter. Washington state is famed for producing many of the most accessible wines of the country, with Merlot and Chardonnay varietal grapes leading the way, and much experimentation with other varietals characterizing the state's produce in the twenty-first century.

The region has been building up a powerful reputation over the past few decades, and dozens of wineries have opened within the sub-region of Walla Walla over the past twenty years, helping it establish itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of United States wines. Walla Walla is internationally renowned for the high quality of its Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varietal wines, made from imported French grape varietals which adore the dry and arid soils which are found within the region. However, many grape varietals thrive within Walla Walla, and wineries are now expanding their portfolios and creating a wide array of wines.

The 2021 Grenache River Rock Vineyard is dusty and darkly floral with notes of black currant, plum sauce and black olive complicated by lavender pastille. This is juicy to the core, with silky textures and racy acidity. Savory red and black fruits swirl throughout, underscored by crunchy mineral tones as violet inner florals resonate. Hints of sour citrus pucker the cheeks as the mouth is left watering for more, and a subtle coating of dusty tannins slowly fades.

Medium to full-bodied, supple, up-front, and sexy, with moderate acidity, it’s a beautifully hedonistic Grenache that’s going to shine right out of the gate yet still have 10-15 years of longevity. 246 cases.

From the River Rock Vineyard in the Rocks District, on the Oregon side of Walla Walla Valley, this intense and ripe Grenache shows dried florals, smoky violet notes playing alongside dried rose petals with an intensity of dried spices. The palate leans into the wine's savoury core as cloves and Mediterranean scrub vie for attention, piquant blood orange notes, gobs of dark plums, and ripe berries—Plush at the finish.

On the surface, vineyards in the Rocks District look similar. It doesn’t mean they’re the same. River Rock offers a different expression of Grenache that captivates the imagination. River Rock Vineyard Grenache is high-toned, with gorgeous fruit across the palate balanced by exotic spice notes.
