Varietal

Chenin Blanc

Originating in France yet now grown in many parts of the New World, Chenin Blanc is one of the most versatile and highly regarded white wine grape varietals on earth. These green skinned grapes hold a relatively high acid content, and as such can be used for making still white wines of exceptional quality, as well as superb sparkling wines (such as the Crémant wines of the Loire Valley) and extremely aromatic dessert wines. Their natural transparency means that they are a fine grape for expressing their terroir in the bottle, and winemakers often experiment with this varietal to coax unusual and intense flavors from the grapes, such as allowing the development of noble rot on the fruit in order to make sweet and viscous wines of a unique character.

Region

Loire Valley

Within France, the one region most closely associated with fine white and rosé wines is surely the Loire Valley. With over eight controlled appellations, and a relatively large expanse of land covering this wide valley, the Loire Valley is an ideal location for wineries wishing to produce large quantities of excellent quality vines for their wine production. Indeed, this region has been associated with excellent white wines for over a thousand years, with it once being the favorite wine region for the crowned heads of England, France and beyond. Today, it produces a wide range of white wines, and several rosé and red varieties also. It is also widely celebrated for being home to some of France's most lively and fruity sparkling crémant wines, which more than match those produced in nearby Champagne.

Appellation

Anjou-Saumur

Anjou-Saumur, an enchanting wine appellation in the Loire Valley, France, is celebrated for its diverse and vibrant array of wines. What makes Anjou-Saumur unique is its expansive range of terroirs, from the schist soils of Savennières to the limestone cliffs of Saumur-Champigny, allowing for the production of diverse styles from various grape varieties. Anjou-Saumur is renowned for its Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Chenin Blanc, in particular, thrives in the region, producing outstanding dry, off-dry, and sweet wines, including the renowned Coteaux du Layon. The appellation's commitment to sustainable viticulture adds to its uniqueness, emphasizing the harmony between the vineyards and the picturesque landscapes of the Loire Valley. Exploring Anjou-Saumur offers wine enthusiasts a journey into the heart of the Loire, where the diversity of terroir and the dedication to expressive winemaking create wines that capture the essence of this historic and picturesque wine region.

Move over Luther Vandross, Thibaud Boudignon is in town and the Clos de la Hutte makes you want to slow dance with it. The 2020 is a wine that makes your shoulders drop such is its tranquility and sense of comfort in your mouth. It blooms in the mouth and does so without any sense of heaviness. The finish, scented with flowers and nectarines, is long, fragrant and textural. I hate using the word minerality as it means so many different things to people, but in my opinion, this has it in spades. It is incredible that the vines were only planted in 2011 on the schistous site on the grounds of a former monastery. Aged in larger format barrels, there's no sense of oakiness, allowing the purity of this wine to shine bright.

Winery Notes

• Practicing biodynamic. • 100% Chenin Blanc. • From the lieu-dit ‘Clos de La Hutte’ in the hamlet of La Possonnière. • Site of a former monastery. • Planted in 2011 – massal selection. • Grown on solid schist, some spots to the surface, others 15cm of clay and sand before hitting the mother rock. • Indigenous yeast. • No malo.
