The tangy acidity is puckering in this lean and racy version, delivering lemon and stone flavors, with accents of vanilla and toasted brioche. Balanced in a lithe way and long on the finish.

Varietal

Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Appellation

Cote De Beaune

The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, taken directly from barrel, has a very clean, precise bouquet of lemon curd and white flower aromas that feel seductive already. The palate has some CO2 at the moment, but there is plenty of energy and lovely orange zest notes on the finish. This is often overlooked within the canon of Corton-Charlemagnes, but I find a lot of promise here.

From Le Corton. A touch of post-bottling sulfur dominates the fruit at present but it doesn’t affect the palate impression of the sleek, intense and muscular middle weight plus flavors that are blessed with good levels of sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a bitter lemon and mineral-inflected finish. This tension-filled effort is sufficiently forward to be approachable after only 3 to 4 years yet it should reward up to a decade of cellaring.

Winery Notes

This is classic Corton-Charlemagne with incredible weight, texture, and layers of mineral complexity. The wine shows aromas and flavors of white peach, apple blossoms, and salty minerality with toast and brioche from aging in 60% new oak barrels. There is always plenty of nerve and tension in Corton-Charlemagne, making a wine with excellent aging potential.
