#9 in Top 20 of 2025. The “other” distillery on the Isle of Skye, besides the famous Talisker, is Torabhaig, which opened in 2017 on a scenic farmstead overlooking the Sound of Sleat. As a recent arrival, Torabhaig thus far is offering only annual releases, but they’re showing complexity and maturity beyond their years. This year’s release was matured in bourbon and virgin oak barrels, and has flavors of peach, apricot, strawberry, and vanilla, against island notes of peat smoke, dried seaweed, and seashells. Torabhaig’s ultimate goal is to make a flagship 10 year old; for now, we’re very happy sipping this one.

Winery Notes

Nose: Notes of delicate orange lead followed by touches of apricot and popcorn lending sweetness to the maritime seaweed that echoes in the glass. Subtle pipe tobacco adds to the elegant smokiness and is rounded out by honey, vanilla and boiled sweets. Palate: Light and zesty oak spice is joined by the rich and sweet bonfire smokiness that is so unmistakably Torabhaig spirit. Subtly waxy with hints of honey and vanilla balancing sea salt and seaweed that ebbs away to white pepper and sweet spice. Finish: Like a sunset over the Sound of Sleat, this is lingering and elegant with notes of honey, storms and the ocean.
