Founded in 1898 and based in Termeno, a little southwest of Bolzano, Cantina Tramin is one of Italy’s most respected cooperatives, bringing together some 160 grower families across about 270ha of alpine vineyards. Among its most emblematic wines is the Unterebner Pinot Grigio, introduced in 1989. Sourced from higher-elevation sites at 400m-600m and aged on its lees for 11 months in large oak barrels and tonneaux, it offers a full-bodied expression, with the ideal equilibrium between depth and texture beyond the conventional. Melania Battiston: Reflects Pinot Grigio’s character with freshness and vigour. Well-used oak helps to expand the candied citrus, but it’s still gentle and elegant. Andrea Briccarello: Straw, golden-green. Nutty, intense, mineral and citrus-fruit nose with camomile, lemon peel, sage and bread crust. Intense and layered, with a complex, sweet yellow-fruit finish. Bruno Besa: Clean, zingy and citrusy, lovely Pinot expression. Honey and ripe white fruits, tropical whiffs. Well balanced and long.

The Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris grape varietal is now one of the most widely grown vines in the world, due to the surge in popularity of Pinot Grigio wines over the past twenty years or so. These grayish-blue fruits, which hang in their distinctively conical bunches, are responsible for a very broad range of wines famous for their variety of color tones and flavors Pinot Grigio varietal grapes are highly influenced by terroir, climate and particularly the skill and expertise of the vintners who process them. As such, there are full bodied, amber colored wines made from this grape, and there are equally delicious yet far leaner, paler, lighter bodied and crisp white wines made from the same species in other parts of the world.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

As the name suggests, the northern Italian wine region of Trentino-Alto Adige is made up of two separate areas, with Trento in the south, and the Adige river in the north. There are few parts of Italy quite as alluring for wine fans as Trentino-Alto Adige, as this is an area in which Italian wines become really quite unique and surprising. As the region is nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, it is quite a long way from the sun drenched islands of the south, or the rolling hillsides of central Italy. Indeed, the wines of Trentino-Alto Adige are packed full of fresh, vibrant alpine flavors and aromas, and are as influenced by the Germanic styles of wine making as they are influenced by those of the Italians, making the wines of this region really quite unusual, and utterly captivating. Wineries in Trentino-Alto Adige use both native and imported grape varietals for their wines, and they are generally considered to be amongst the finest in Italy.

Sliced apples, pears, clotted cream and almonds on the nose of this full-bodied yet crisp white. It’s attractively salty on the palate, with excellent density and a long, minerally and saline finish. Better in a few years. Drink or hold.

The Cantina Tramin 2023 Alto Adige Pinot Grigio Unterebner is a crisp and luminous wine with bright aromas of citrus, grapefruit, white flower and crushed stone. From the Alto Adige school of Alpine whites, this spends 11 months in botte grande and tonneaux. Fruit comes from a 4.5-hectare site with a porphyry rock subsoil and gravel at the surface. Drink this wine within the next two years, while the aromas are freshest. This is a production of 30,000 bottles.

Winery Notes

The Unterebner is a substantial Pinot Grigio that shows a deep straw color and a nose dominated by spicy and floral aromas. On the palate, it balances mineral notes with considerable weight and richness. Flavors of pear and apple are followed by white flower and subtle notes of vanilla with a long and lasting finish.
