Varietal

Italian Red Blend

Italian Red Blends stand as a testament to the country’s rich winemaking diversity and heritage. Comprising a harmonious mix of indigenous and international grape varieties, these wines encapsulate the unique character of Italy’s diverse wine regions. Blends like Super Tuscans, combining Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, showcase a fusion of tradition and innovation. The Nebbiolo-based blends from Piedmont, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, exemplify elegance and longevity. Each region contributes distinct flavors, from the bold red fruits of the south to the structured tannins of the north. The artistry lies in winemakers’ hands, skillfully crafting blends that balance acidity, tannins, and fruit expression. Italian Red Blends offer a kaleidoscope of aromas, flavors, and textures, reflecting the country’s varied terroirs. Whether exploring a classic Chianti blend or a contemporary interpretation, these wines invite enthusiasts on a captivating journey through Italy’s winemaking mosaic.

Country

Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region

Tuscany

The central Italian region of Tuscany is widely understood to be one of the world's most famous and highly regarded wine regions. The beautiful rolling hillsides and medieval towns and castles which are a key feature of the area are also home to many of Europe's finest wineries, and extremely high quality vineyards growing the distinctive Sangiovese and Vernaccia grape varietals which are the flavorful backbone of Tuscany's wonderful red and white wines. For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

Appellation

Bolgheri

Bolgheri, nestled along the sun-soaked Tuscan coast, is a revered wine appellation renowned for producing outstanding red wines. What sets Bolgheri apart is its pioneering role in the creation of “Super Tuscan” wines, challenging traditional Italian winemaking. These wines often blend indigenous Sangiovese with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, resulting in rich, complex flavors and a remarkable aging potential. Bolgheri’s coastal location influences a distinctive microclimate, characterized by warm days and cool maritime breezes, imparting freshness and structure to the wines. Notably, Sassicaia, born in Bolgheri, stands as a global benchmark for quality. Bolgheri wines, with their innovative spirit and unique terroir, encapsulate the essence of modern Italian winemaking, offering enthusiasts an exciting journey through the evolution of this dynamic appellation.

WE 96pts

Wine Enthusiast

A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this shows compelling intensity and lovely layers of black fruit, ripe cherry, leather, tobacco, black pepper and licorice. The complexity is impressive, and so is the palate's persistence and elegance. Hold for 10 years or more. (Cellar Selection)

DC 95pts

Decanter

Zesty, elegant oaky nose. Suave and succulent, with lovely mouthwatering fruit. Invigorating, with a long, chocolatey finish.

WA 94pts

Wine Advocate

The 2010 Giusto di Notri shows similar heft and determination with a more evolved and slightly more sophisticated bouquet. There is a lot of black fruit at the start with background tones of dark mineral, tobacco and spice. The delivery is robust and fleshy at the same time. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

JS 94pts

James Suckling

Very beautiful aromas of crushed currants and blackberries. Full body, with lots of silky tannins and a long fresh finish. Focused and balanced. Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Better after 2014.

VM 94pts

Vinous Media

Dark raspberries, freshly cut flowers, violets, licorice mint and sweet spices literally jump from the glass in the 2010 Giusto di Notri. An articulate, beautifully delineated wine, the 2010 impresses for its nuance and balance. Even with all the richness, the flavors remain bright, focused and lively. This is a great showing from Tua Rita. Giusto di Notri is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. (Galloni)

WS 93pts

Wine Spectator

Dark, concentrated flavors of black cherry and plum are accented by spice and earth in this monolithic red. The dense tannins are firm yet buried as this doles out its black fruit and spice notes on the fresh finish. Balanced overall and shows potential. Best from 2015 through 2028. 2,000 cases made.

Winery Notes

Deep purple in color, Giusto di Notri offers abundant aromas of blackberry, plum and currants with underpinnings of coriander, violet and a touch of vanilla. Full-bodied, with ripe, fine tannins, and a silky texture, this is a stunning wine with great aging potential.
