The 2013 Giusto di Notri is a proud, proud, proud achievement. This is an enormously profound red wine that raises a noble and majestic banner that flies high above the enological coast of Tuscany. The blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller components of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Merlot currently clocks in at 10% and that quota has been reduced compared to past vintages. The wine is aged in equal parts new and neutral oak. This is a gorgeous wine that surprises most of all thanks to the unexpected nature of its fine and delicate floral aromas. Yes, there’s plenty of black fruit and spice at its core. That’s par for the course when it comes to a wine of this important extraction, intensity and power. But that flirtatious, perfumed hint of blue flower and rose bud is its most memorable feature in my opinion. This is a very special wine.

Italian Red Blend

Italian Red Blends stand as a testament to the country’s rich winemaking diversity and heritage. Comprising a harmonious mix of indigenous and international grape varieties, these wines encapsulate the unique character of Italy’s diverse wine regions. Blends like Super Tuscans, combining Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, showcase a fusion of tradition and innovation. The Nebbiolo-based blends from Piedmont, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, exemplify elegance and longevity. Each region contributes distinct flavors, from the bold red fruits of the south to the structured tannins of the north. The artistry lies in winemakers’ hands, skillfully crafting blends that balance acidity, tannins, and fruit expression. Italian Red Blends offer a kaleidoscope of aromas, flavors, and textures, reflecting the country’s varied terroirs. Whether exploring a classic Chianti blend or a contemporary interpretation, these wines invite enthusiasts on a captivating journey through Italy’s winemaking mosaic.

Country

Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

Region

Tuscany

The central Italian region of Tuscany is widely understood to be one of the world's most famous and highly regarded wine regions. The beautiful rolling hillsides and medieval towns and castles which are a key feature of the area are also home to many of Europe's finest wineries, and extremely high quality vineyards growing the distinctive Sangiovese and Vernaccia grape varietals which are the flavorful backbone of Tuscany's wonderful red and white wines. For almost three thousand years, this region has been recognized as an ideal home for wine production on a large scale, and the ancient Etruscans, Greeks and Romans all noticed that fine grape varietals flourished on the unique soils and under the hot sunshine which typifies the area. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

Appellation

Bolgheri

Bolgheri, nestled along the sun-soaked Tuscan coast, is a revered wine appellation renowned for producing outstanding red wines. What sets Bolgheri apart is its pioneering role in the creation of “Super Tuscan” wines, challenging traditional Italian winemaking. These wines often blend indigenous Sangiovese with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, resulting in rich, complex flavors and a remarkable aging potential. Bolgheri’s coastal location influences a distinctive microclimate, characterized by warm days and cool maritime breezes, imparting freshness and structure to the wines. Notably, Sassicaia, born in Bolgheri, stands as a global benchmark for quality. Bolgheri wines, with their innovative spirit and unique terroir, encapsulate the essence of modern Italian winemaking, offering enthusiasts an exciting journey through the evolution of this dynamic appellation.

2013 was a cooler and fresher vintage, similar to 2018, and you can feel an expression of cool freshness in the wine. There are very pretty, delicate yet precise aromas of pure cassis and blackcurrant leaf with some background cream and oak-spice notes adding depth. This is a pretty, vibrant, filigree, lacey style of wine. Tua Rita are going from strength to strength and I love the refined tannins and vivid aromas of this wine.

This is focused and intense, with black currant, plum, tar and earth flavors riding the dense texture, buoyed by a vibrant structure. Balanced and long. Approachable now, but this should really hit its stride in a year or two. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2018 through 2030. 2,000 cases made.

Extremely perfumed with roses, currants and hints of lavender. Full body, firm tannins and bright acidity. Chewy and elegant. Some wood on the finish, which is lovely. Needs another two or three years to soften.

The 2013 Giusto di Notri is wonderfully vibrant and pulsating in the glass. Blue and purplish hued fruits, spices, mint and licorice are some of the notes that flesh out. Delineated and beautifully nuanced throughout, the 2013 speaks to understatement and finesse. In this vintage, the Merlot is down and the Cabernet Sauvignon is up, which, along with the personality of the year, yields a tense, vibrant wine endowed with superb energy. The purity of the fruit here is striking. Stylistically, the 2013 does a great job of reconciling the natural opulence of Suvereto with attractive elements of freshness from the cool nights that defined the late harvest. (Vinous)

Winery Notes

Deep purple in color, Giusto di Notri offers abundant aromas of blackberry, plum and currants with underpinnings of coriander, violet and a touch of vanilla. Full-bodied, with ripe, fine tannins, and a silky texture, this is a stunning wine with great aging potential.
