The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Today, Tuscany is home to a wide range of wines, from the traditional to the complex, but all dedicated to excellent flavors and aromas, and maintaining the region's international reputation.

The 2022 Rosso di Montalcino entices with a whiff of mint leaf and sage before giving way to crushed black cherries, clove and white smoke. This shows the ripeness of the vintage in a beautifully balanced package, with mineral-laced red and blue fruits that swirl across textures of pure silk. It finishes incredibly long, repeating its mineral strength. Sweet tannins linger through the violet-tinged finale. The 2022 is an understated beauty.

Andrea Cortonesi’s reputation for Brunello continues to grow, but the Rosso remains under the radar. This traditionally made wine has a rich, spicy nose with plenty of tomato puree and black cherry. The palate is firm and structured, with bags of tannins, showing good acidity and chew. It should continue to develop well over the next four to six years. Bold, gutsy, crowdpleasing and thoroughly Tuscan, this is a wine for the famous cucina povera – dishes with beans and oil, and fat-spiked meats.

A ripe red color, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino is a potent little Rosso on the nose, with notes of wild cherries, anise, and pine needles. Medium-bodied, with good structure, it’s showing the warmth of the vintage, with modest acidity. but it retains good freshness in spite of that. It’s a very charming wine to enjoy over the next 2-3 years.

Winery Notes

The Uccelliera Rosso is highly limited in production, featuring an unusually powerful nose. This med-red colored wine is filled with aromas of crunchy dark cherries and black currants, compounded by smoky and tobacco notes. Pure and unctuous in the mouth with loads of fruit and glycerin. Finishes with balance and ripe tannins.
