The 2023 Dido Blanc had less skin contact, to try to counterbalance the ripeness of the year, something they started in 2022. It’s a year with a more generous expression, but there’s purity in the wines. They achieved good balance, a very clean nose and a medium-bodied palate with 13.5% alcohol. There’s a little more Macabeo, 55%, with 30% Garnacha Blanca and 15% Xarel.lo, mostly from direct pressing. It fermented in foudre and spent a longer time in concrete, around eight months. There’s a flinty note, reminiscent of struck match, lots of flowers and herbs and an austere and stony palate. I found it superb, better than previous years. They accidentally found what they were looking for with the direct pressing of the Garnacha…

Ever since the Phoenicians and Romans brought their knowledge of vine cultivation to Spanish soils, the country's culture has grown alongside wine production, with wine being a vital part of Spanish identity and Spanish traditions. Each region of Spain has a wine quite distinct from the others, and it is produced by smallholders and families as much as it is by large companies and established wineries. From the relatively mild and lush regions of La Rioja to the arid plateaus that surround Madrid, grapes are grown in abundance for the now booming Spanish wine industry, and new laws and regulations have recently been put in place to keep the country's standards high. By combining traditional practices with modern technology, Spanish wineries are continuing to produce distinctive wines of great character, flavor and aroma, with the focus shifting in recent decades to quality over quantity.

The beautiful Spanish wine region of Catalunya has a history of viticulture which stretches back for over a thousand years, and has been influenced by a wide range of people who moved through the region, and brought their wine making skills and expertise with them. The region itself is a sizeable one, covering an area of sixty thousand hectares, and within this space there resides over two hundred individual wineries, ranging from small, independent and traditional ones to the larger, mass production bodegas known around the world. The terroir of Catalunya is varied, and ranges from being dry and arid, to more lush and green in the wetter parts of the region which are closer to the coast. This variation in terroir results in a fantastic range of grape varietals being grown, and a wide range of wine styles are produced within Catalunya.

The 2023 Dido from Montsant blends Macabeu, Garnatxa Blanca and Cartoixà, with brisat-style vinification on the Macabeu. Orange notes, reduction, soft apricot and grated apple open the wine. It is expressive and energetic, with grip, compact freshness and an alcoholic push reflecting the vintage. A flavorful white.

A delightfully textured, oily, and viscous white, the 2023 Dido blends 50% Macabeu, 40% Garnatxa Blanca, and 10% Cartoixa (Xarello in Catalan), the Macabeu seeing two weeks of skin contact. The vines are older and planted in limestone soils, a rarity in the region outside of the higher reaches of Scala Dei. Neutral oak is used for aging. Gorgeously complex, drink now through 2030.

This vivid, golden-hued white is lightly chalky in texture, with notes of dried white peach, crushed gravel, mountain herbs, vanilla and ground ginger. Hints of grilled macadamia nut and smoke enrich the finish. Macabeu, Garnatxa Blanca and Xarel-lo. Drink now through 2033. 1,500 cases made, 50 cases imported.

This white blend is voluptuous and elegant with aromas of autumn spices, ripe fruit, nuts and seeds. Creamy on the palate with a long finish.
