Noel Verset was a revered figure in Cornas, and his first vintage was 1942. Alain is his nephew, who runs his own 2-hectare property, but in the same traditional manner that his uncle practiced. That means whole-bunch fermentation, natural yeasts, and ageing in large neutral casks. The colour is very deep, the nose brooding and intense, with plum and blackberry aromas, with some notes of tar and olives. It’s very concentrated and robust, still very youthful, and it displays tension as well as weight. But it’s uncompromising in style and needs time to open up. If you like your Syrah sleek and oaky, this will not be for you. Drinking Window 2022 – 2035.

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Brilliant violet. A complex bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits and floral pastilles, along with licorice, cracked pepper and olive accents. Fleshy and energetic in the mouth, offering intense boysenberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors supported by a spine of zesty acidity. Rich yet surprisingly lively in style. Finishes gently sweet and very long, revealing slow-building tannins and a late jolt of cracked pepper.

The 2015 Cornas offers a high-toned style in its plum, violet, white pepper and incense aromatics. This gives way to a ripe, textured, sweetly fruited Cornas that has a touch of dry tannin, yet impressive depth of fruit and a good finish. Give bottles a year or two, then drink through 2027.
