Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

In recent years, it has been the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines which have gained the most attention, as a result of their smoky character and ability to carry the mineral rich nature of the terroir they grow in. Changing consumer interests have brought about a considerable rise in the production of organic and sustainable wines in New Zealand, of which again, the Sauvignon Blanc varietals are leading the way in regards to excellence, flavor and overall character.

Marlborough

On the north-easterly tip of New Zealand's South Island, we find the beautiful region of Marlborough, home to some of the New World's finest white wines and dozens of quality vineyards. The region itself has been producing their award winning white wines – most commonly made with Sauvignon Blanc grapes – in large numbers since the 1970s, and is today widely recognized as being home to some of the best examples of both modern and traditional styles of Sauvignon Blanc wines. The region benefits from its dry and hot climate, and the cooling oceanic breezes which help the grapes there reach full ripeness. One of the key features of the Marlborough region is the fact that whilst the days are generally very hot, the nights are cold, thus allowing the vintners who work in the region to considerably extend the grapes' ripening period and encourage much more expression of flavor and terroir.

The 2021 Single Vineyard The Attorney Pinot Noir is full-throttle in its outlay of fruit and oak. In the mouth, the strawberry/cherry/pomegranate characters are supported and bolstered by a generous serving of spicy oak. The wine feels built in a way that makes it appear bigger than the fruit really is. The Attorney vineyard is located in the Southern Valleys area, which more than accounts for its inherent power, darker color and length of flavor. The Southern Valleys are up on the eastern slopes of the Wairau and are made of windblown glacial loess and clay.

Winery Notes

The first impression of Attorney is stern, this is a wine that wants to be noticed, and should be taken seriously, however as it opens up you should find ample black cherry fruit, bold tannins and subtle graphite minerality from the oak supporting the wine and adding freshness. This broody, dense Pinot Noir has heady aromas of coffee beans, dried herbs, and freshly picked black cherries. On the palate, the smooth rounded cocoa tannins are balanced by the youthful acidity and subtle hints of toasty oak.
