The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Casa Real, from Alto Jahuel, spent 20 months in barrels, 83% of them new. Garnet red with a purple sheen. The nose presents black currant, blackberry, cedar, balsamic and ashy notes from the aging process, as well as orange peel, graphite and a minty backdrop. The best qualities are the broad, polished tannins and the silky feel. Lingers at length at the back of the mouth, leading to a fruity, complex finish followed by an aftertaste of sour cherry.

By far and away the most recognized and widely grown red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon. Now grown everywhere from its native France to the furthest reaches of the New World, Cabernet Sauvignon is adored and prized by wineries for its hardiness and resistance to rot, as well as its large and sharp flavors and wonderful capability for fine aging Indeed, many of the finest wines of history and the modern age would be simply unimaginable without Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with the famed wineries of Bordeaux and other important regions using it as the primary grape in their oak aged produce. High tannin levels, acidity and powerful flavors are the characteristics most commonly associated with this varietal, however, when blended and slowly aged, it is capable of a world of flavors and aromas unmatched by any other grape.

Chile has a long and rich wine history which dates back to the Spanish conquistadors of the 16th century, who were the first to discover that the wonderful climate and fertile soils of this South American country were ideal for vine cultivation. It has only been in the past forty or fifty years, however, that Chile as a modern wine producing nation has really had an impact on the rest of the world. Generally relatively cheap in price,Whilst being widely regarded as definitively 'New World' as a wine producing country, Chile has actually been cultivating grapevines for wine production for over five hundred years. The Iberian conquistadors first introduced vines to Chile with which to make sacramental wines, and although these were considerably different in everything from flavor, aroma and character to the wines we associate with Chile today, the country has a long and interesting heritage when it comes to this drink. Chilean wine production as we know it first arose in the country in the mid to late 19th century, when wealthy landowners and industrialists first began planting vineyards as a way of adopting some European class and style. They quickly discovered that the hot climate, sloping mountainsides and oceanic winds provided a perfect terroir for quality wines, and many of these original estates remain today in all their grandeur and beauty, still producing the wines which made the country famous.

Chile is a fascinating country when it comes to wines and viticulture, and by far the most internationally renowned wine region in the country is the Valle Central. This expansive valley is located close to the Chilean capital of Santiago, and stretches between the Maipo Valley and Maule Valley, a long, winding fault through the mountainous regions of the country which is now almost completely covered by vineyards producing wines of exquisite character. The region itself may well be associated with the 'New World' of wines, but in actual fact, vineyards have been cultivated around the Maipo valley since the 16th century, when settlers from Europe brought vines across the ocean with which to make sacramental wines. A wide range of grape varietals thrive in the hot climate of Valle Central, from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines the country is most famous for, to Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Carmenere.

It doesn't get much more classical than the 2019 Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon, a textbook example of a Maipo Cabernet with the list of classical descriptors: lead pencil, cedar wood, blackcurrants, mint, balsam, earth and spice. It's juicy and ripe without excess, with 14.5% alcohol, a soft palate and round tannins and a dry finish 14,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021 after 20 months in barrel, 82% of them new, but the oak is neatly integrated in the wine.

Densely flavored, but remarkably polished and elegant, this red unfolds around a core of raspberry coulis and rooibos tea flavors, swelling with energy midpalate and gaining details of floral cassis, and chai spices. It rolls out with expressive scents of stewed red and black plums, redcurrant jelly, and fresh, juicy blackberries, plus suggestions of bay leaves, pencil shavings, and forest floor. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy black and red berry flavors, supported by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with an herbal lift.

Winery Notes

This super-premium wine is the outcome of a careful selection of grapes from Santa Rita’s finest and most historic vineyard at the winery’s famed Alto Jahuel Estate in Chile’s Maipo Valley. Low yields from mature 40-year-old vines favor a rich, supple, full-bodied red, endowed with smooth, enduring tannins and fruit. This is a wine that will continue to evolve and develop in complexity over a period of many years. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Fully-ripened grapes are hand picked in a vineyard first planted in the mid 1950s. Grapes are partially crushed and fermented in French oak barrels, permitting ideal temperature control, for about 12 days, followed by another 15 days of pos-fermentation maceration. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is stored in 100% new French oak barrels for 16 months, with a racking off after 6 months to obtain a finer evolution of it tannins. The wine is bottled and aged for a further year prior to release.
