The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes is a beauty, bursting from the glass with a youthfully expressive bouquet of pear, orange oil, toasted hazelnuts and white flowers. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a fleshy attack that segues into a deep, layered mid-palate that’s girdled by lively acids, it concludes with a long, expansive finish.

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru is much more conservative on the nose than Domaine Leflaive's: touches of peach skin and lanolin, a little 'sunnier' in style though without the minéralité of its peers. The aromatics coalesce and gain delineation with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture. Lots of extract here, lightly spiced with a waxy-textured finish that lingers—this is actually a better wine than it first seems. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Winery Notes

Hazelnut nose. Pure butter, but very refined. Silky power with elegance. Some mineral elements; pure lime sauce. Killer.
