Varietal

Cabernet Sauvignon

By far and away the most recognized and widely grown red wine grape varietal in the world is the Cabernet Sauvignon. First cultivated in the 18th century in France, this wonderful cross of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes has long since been the most important varietal for red wines across the globe. Now grown everywhere from its native France to the furthest reaches of the New World, Cabernet Sauvignon is adored and prized by wineries for its hardiness and resistance to rot, as well as its large and sharp flavors and wonderful capability for fine aging Indeed, many of the finest wines of history and the modern age would be simply unimaginable without Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, with the famed wineries of Bordeaux and other important regions using it as the primary grape in their oak aged produce. High tannin levels, acidity and powerful flavors are the characteristics most commonly associated with this varietal, however, when blended and slowly aged, it is capable of a world of flavors and aromas unmatched by any other grape.

Country

United States

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

Region

Washington State

Since it began in the 1820s, wine-production in Washington state has gone from strength to strength, with many of the finest United States wines coming out over the past twenty years hailing from this region. Today, the state is the second largest US producer of wines, behind California, with over forty thousand acres under vine. The state itself is split into two distinct wine regions, separated by the Cascade Range, which casts an important rain shadow over much of the area. As such, the vast majority of vines are grown and cultivated in the dry, arid desert-like area in the eastern half of the state, with the western half producing less than one percent of the state's wines where it is considerably wetter. Washington state is famed for producing many of the most accessible wines of the country, with Merlot and Chardonnay varietal grapes leading the way, and much experimentation with other varietals characterizing the state's produce in the twenty-first century.

Appellation

Columbia Valley

Columbia Valley, a prominent wine appellation in Washington State, USA, stands out for its diverse and expansive viticultural landscape. What makes Columbia Valley unique is its remarkable versatility, producing a wide array of grape varieties due to its diverse microclimates and soils. This appellation, bordered by the Cascade Mountains, benefits from a continental climate, allowing for extended sunlight hours during the growing season. Columbia Valley is particularly celebrated for its outstanding Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah wines. The region's commitment to sustainable and organic viticulture contributes to the overall uniqueness, emphasizing environmental stewardship. The collaborative spirit among winemakers fosters innovation and quality across a range of wine styles. From crisp Rieslings to robust red blends, Columbia Valley wines express the richness of the Pacific Northwest's terroir, inviting wine enthusiasts to explore the dynamic and evolving landscape of American winemaking.

WE 95pts

Wine Enthusiast

The 31st edition of the Artist Series features broad aromatic strokes of blackberry jam, hyacinths, and worn leather. The flavors range from sweet black cherries and black tea to pine bark and perfectly ripe black truffles, and they fill the mouth. This is a full-bodied wine, with elevated acidity and brawny tannins that frame the fruit in a fine fashion. Enjoy this pretty picture from 2027 to 2038. (Cellar Selection)

WA 94pts

Wine Advocate

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series is blended with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec, and it matured in French and Hungarian oak. It has pure, layered aromas of Luxardo cherries, mint chocolate, thyme and forest floor. The full-bodied palate offers Goldilocks ripeness and complex savory and mineral character. It has a seamless structure of velvety tannins and vibrant acidity and a very long, latent finish.

VM 93pts

Vinous Media

Youthfully coy, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series opens slowly with a mix of dried flowers, incense, mint leaf and blackberries. This is cool-toned and pliant, with ripe black fruits that ride a silken textural wave as a bitter tinge of cocoa adds complexity. Only gently tannic, the 2022 leaves a mentholated freshness and finishes with medium length. Hints of lavender resonate on the close.

JS 92pts

James Suckling

This offers ripe dark berries on the nose, with hints of licorice, cedar, pine cones and cocoa. The palate is juicy and smooth, with a well-defined structure and medium to full body. Focused and lingering. Drink or hold.

Winery Notes

This wine has a beautiful nose of spicy oak and cedar integrated with ripe black fruits and cherry. A firm rich mouth feel begins with cassis and black berry leading towards chocolate and mocha. The finish is generous and long. While this wine can be enjoyed now it will definitely benefit from additional cellaring and with proper storage should develop for eight years or more.
