The 2021 Pinot Noir Conifer comes from grapes planted in both volcanic and marine sedimentary soils and offers aromas characteristic of its name: pine needles, mushrooms and botanical nuances complement a core of wild berry fruit. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated yet seamless. Its spicy fruit is framed by clay-textured tannins and vibrant acidity, and it has a long, layered finish. It opens dramatically with air and will benefit from time in bottle. 629 cases were made.
From the west side of the Zena Crown vineyard, and almost exclusively marine sedimentary soils, in this otherwise volcanic appellation of the Eola-Amity Hills. There's a fleshy blue and red fruits with gorgeous florals and sweet earth tones. Earthy and dark-fruited with exotic spices and smoke. Freshness, fruit and dusty blackberries paint the palate alongside earthen mineral tones.
Sporting a medium ruby color, the 2021 Pinot Noir Conifer is a very expansive wine in its aromatics, with enveloping aromas of – well, you guessed it– pine resin and sappy forest herbs, woven together with framboise, wildflowers, and mossy earth. It was aged for 17 months in 65% new French oak barrels. Medium-bodied and linear, it has fine tannins and crisp, ripe acidity, with a savory finish and a hint of umami richness underneath that’s going to shine through well with time in the cellar. I love this wine now, but it will have the ability to age gracefully if stored in cool cellars. Drink 2024-2040.
Spirited and handsomely built, with expressive flavors of cherry and blueberry accented by anise and juniper berry as this builds tension toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032. 639 cases made.
Combines warm strawberries and cherries in the aroma with light pine and mint tones that multiply on the palate, while bracing acidity and full tannins hold them tightly for now. Intense black cherries, sour cherries and cranberries create a tight, concentrated core that needs time to fully develop. Best from 2027.
The 2021 Pinot Noir Conifer impresses with its old-school bouquet, blending flowery underbrush and worn leather with spiced orange and dried black cherries. It sweeps across the palate with soft yet lifted textures, coming across as energetic and spry with citrus-tinged red berry fruits that slowly saturate. Cola and spice cake notes gradually fade as the 2021 finishes juicy and fresh yet incredibly long, with a framework of fine tannins. This is a total pleasure to taste.
Winery Notes
Refreshing as the cold Deschutes River cutting through Oregon’s arid desert, the 2021 Conifer has an incredible balance of earth and fruit, both in aromatic and flavor profiles. Bit-O-Honey, rhubarb, pine duff and cherry give way to dark chocolate, white pepper and sesame seeds on the palate. Notes of boysenberry and chanterelles melt into a broad, acid driven finish.
