Restrained if not reductive. It seems to be herbal, almost unripe, on the nose, but then the fruit is fresh redcurrant with whiffs of complexity. Crunchy tannins and crisp acidity with fragrant fruit on the palate which is quite biting on the finish, yet savoury too, A very tense Barbaresco, very classic with a sort of old style, definitely not ready to drink now but plenty of character. It deserves attention for ageing. An extremely classic estate with old vines. Fermentation in concrete and large Slavonian oak for ageing. ... More details

A fresh, juicy red highlighted by cherry, plum, tar, grass and eucalyptus flavors. Gains support from vibrant acidity and pliable tannins as this cruises to a long aftertaste of fruit, vegetal and mineral notes. Best from 2026 through 2040.

The Giuseppe Cortese 2020 Barbaresco delivers aromas of crushed rose, redcurrant, licorice and camphor ash. The mouthfeel is lean and polished, and this classic Barbaresco offers a solid near to medium-term drinking window thanks to its open, fruit-forward style. It ages in Slavonian oak casks for 18 months, and 10,000 bottles were released this past spring.

The 2020 Barbaresco is redolent of crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, cedar, spice, orange peel, new leather and white pepper. Aromatic, lifted and quite brilliant, the 2020 is super-expressive in the early going. All the elements are so well balanced. This is so pleasurable today.

Rated 92 - Made with grapes from the Rabajà and Trifolera crus, this smooth red has aromas of violet, berry and wild herb. On the palate, polished tannins gracefully support juicy cherry, orange zest and dark spice. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink through 2030. - Kerin O’Keefe

Subtle aromas of red berries, ground spices and dried red flowers with hints of nutmeg and citrus peel. Medium-bodied and juicy with velvety, nicely integrated tannins and a polished finish. Attractive now, but better from 2025.

Aged for 18 months in cask, the 2020 Barbaresco is a pale ruby and has a floral perfume of grenadine, red flowers, and fresh tarragon. It is medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a linear feel as well as notes of fresh cranberry, zesty orange, and fresh earth. A refreshing style with a focused feel, drink it 2024-2032.

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

Region: Piedmont

The region of Piedmont in the cool, breezy north-western part of Italy is renowned throughout the world for high quality, flavorful and delicious red wines, and for the elegant and refined sparkling wines such as Asti which typify the area. The region is located at the foothills of the Alps, close to the French and Swiss borders, and benefits from some interesting micro-climates formed by its proximity to the mountain range. The key grapes for the fine red wines of Piedmont are Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera – all powerful varietals which are packed full of a range of fruit flavors and which have an affinity for oak making them ideal for aging When it comes to the sparkling Asti, wineries cultivate plenty of Moscato grapes, whose relative transparency make them ideal for expressing their terroir and providing some interesting flavors in the bottle.

Country: Italy

It isn't difficult to understand why Italy is famed not just for the quality of its wines, but also for the vast variety and range of characteristics found in the wines there. The terrain of the country varies wildly, from the lush rolling green hills and valley of Tuscany, to the sun drenched rocky coasts of Sicily, the mountainous and alpine regions of the north, and the marshy lowlands of the east. Italy really does have a little bit of everything. Combine this huge range of landscapes with an almost perfect climate for grape cultivation, and you have a country seemingly designed for viticultural excellence. The results speak for themselves, and it is clear to see that wine has become an inseparable part of Italian culture as a result of its abundance and brilliance. Each village, city and region has a local wine perfectly matched with the cuisine of the area, and not an evening passes without the vast majority of Italian families raising a glass of locally sourced wine with pride and pleasure.
