An attractive nose, with dense floral notes to color the ripe red berries and cherries. Hints of white nuts and apricot skins add to the appeal. The same enticing fruit mix on the palate, too, with an easy bed of fine but loosely knit tannin that adds a luxurious note to the mouth-feel. All in all, this is quite an extravagant Barolo with loads to like now, but should age gracefully. Best from 2024. ... More details

With fruit from Roddi, the 2018 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is open-knit and broad, and its aromas focus on dark fruit, ripe cherry and plum. This vintage does not have the extreme aromatic definition that we saw in past vintages, but it delivers a long and polished mouthfeel nonetheless. Production is 7,000 bottles.

The 2018 Barolo Bricco Ambrogio is one of the most pleasant surprises in this range. Medium in body, with terrific fruit density and fine balance, the 2018 offers up the essence of sweet red cherry fruit, kirsch, blood orange, rose petal, spice and mint. I remember visiting this site with Enrico Scavino many years ago, before it was planted, and seeing his excitement about its potential. In 2018, all of that really comes through.

Aromas of camphor, purple flower, ripe dark-skinned berry and spice come to the forefront. Full-bodied and enveloping, the palate offers ripe raspberry, truffle, cherry marinated in spirits and licorice alongside velvety, fine-grained tannins before closing on the heat of evident alcohol.

Rated 90 by Wine Spectator
A fruity style, this red boasts strawberry, cherry, rose, eucalyptus and tobacco aromas and flavors. Turns more austere as this crosses the finish line, before a glimpse of ripe fruit returns. Best from 2025 through 2038. 600 cases made, 150 cases imported.
Winery
Bricco Ambrogio has an intense and multifaceted aromatic spectrum. The core is soft and polished through a beautiful acid-tannic balance. There is an underlying depth in this Barolo and the finish is long and nuanced.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

Region: Piedmont

For hundreds of years, the beautiful alpine region of Piedmont in north-west Italy has been producing excellent quality red wines, and some of the most characterful sparkling white wines to have ever come out of the Old World. The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
