It’s not the bruising behemoth that so often comes from this Barossa Valley sub-region, mainly because the acid line of this vintage is more pronounced, keeping the big blackberry and purple plum tones long, clean and nimble on the palate. A note of hoisin sauce heaviness licks the dark berries as the palate drives through to a dry finish that concludes with a dusting of spice among the tannins. Released at A$100/bottle.

Deep magenta. Highly expressive black and blue fruit preserve, incense, vanilla and cola aromas, plus smoky oak and spice notes in the background. Palate-staining kirsch, mulberry, vanilla and fruitcake flavors are braced by a spine of smoky minerality. Gains weight with air while retaining verve, and finishes appealingly sweet and very long, with polished tannins adding framework and final grip. Raised in a blend of French and American oak barrels.

Varietal: Syrah

The Shiraz or Syrah grape varietal has seen a huge surge in popularity over the past few decades, partly due to the fact that more and more wineries around the world are beginning to plant and process this robust and flavorful grape for international audiences. This varietal has plenty going for it, and has the special ability of being able to clearly express positive features of its terroir in the bottle, alongside its characteristic flavors of dark berries, pepper and other spices. Shiraz/Syrah is also notably a highly versatile grape, and has been successfully used in several type of still red wine, as well as excellent sparkling and fortified wines. It is also regularly used as a blending grape, where it is prized for its ability to add a bold and strong, spicy punch to mellow, blended wines.

The enormous wine region of South Australia covers a huge area, and is bordered by all other mainland Australian states. The region itself is split into six key sub-regions, Barossa Zone, Far North Zone, The Fleurieu Zone, Mount Lofty Ranges Zone and the Limestone Coast Zone. All have a range of climatic conditions within them, and as such, produce a wide variety of wine types and styles using a range of different grape varietals. South Australia holds the country's oldest wineries, with a viticultural history which dates back to the mid 19th century, when the country was first being properly established. Early settlers noticed that, with the help of some irrigation, the higher altitude areas of the region and the valley sides were ideal for vineyard cultivation. Today, the region produces an enormous amount of wine, including Australia's famous Shiraz and Chardonnay examples, which are enjoyed all over the world.

Combine this with the experimental and daring approach Australian wineries have in regards to wine production, and it becomes clear why Australia has relatively quickly become something of a world leader when it come to exporting their produce to Europe and America. The Shiraz and Chardonnay grape varietals have produced the most successful and broadly appreciated results over the decades, however, in more recent years wineries have begun experimenting with a much wider range of grape varietals, demonstrating how Australian wineries are continuing to adapt and develop alongside international palates.
