Charles van Canneyt thinks that the longevity of the best 2018s will surprise us in the future, and I suspect he may have a point when it comes to this effortlessly concentrated, complex Grand Cru. Aged in 45% new barrels, it's engagingly sweet, nuanced and juicy with velvety tannins, refreshing acidity for the vintage and a long, nuanced finish. Hard to keep your hands off it young, but give it time in bottle.

The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru needs some encouragement from the glass but rewards the effort with wonderful pure dark cherry, bergamot, rose petal and vanilla pod aromas that gather pace with aeration. The harmonious palate is beautifully balanced with ripe succulent tannins and gentle grip. Gorgeous licorice-tinged black fruit here, and a very persistent finish. This is a superb Romanée-Saint-Vivant fulfilling its potential from barrel.

This is ripe yet quite fresh and elegant with its super-spicy liqueur-like aromas of cassis, spice and discreet floral nuances. There is equally good freshness to the super-sleek, intense and refined middle weight flavors that retain good detail while also flashing impressive power on the sappy and acidulated bon bons finish. This isn't quite as interesting as the 2019 version but it's very good all the same.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Region: Burgundy

In the beautiful French wine region of Burgundy, there is archaeological evidence to suggest that there has been viticultural activity going on for at least two thousand years. To add to this, there are early written records praising the exceptional wines produced in this region dating back to the 6th century, making Burgundy one of the oldest established and still operational wine regions in the world. The region is most commonly associated with fine red wines, with Pinot Noir being the primary grape varietal grown on its rolling hillsides and gently sloping valleys. However, Chardonnay grapes are also produced in abundance for the production of their fine white wines, with both varietals benefiting greatly from the region's warm, hot summers and the superb soils which make up the terroir.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
