The 2013 Assyrtiko is all un-oaked Assyrtiko coming in at 13.5% alcohol, with only 1.1 g/l of residual sugar. Piercing and bone dry, this adds a layer of depth to the winery’s Atlantis white, also reviewed this issue and opens rather powerfully with more penetration on the finish. If it lacks the Atlantis’ fruity charm (at the moment), it still drinks well now. Its structure is impressive, the acidity giving it some tension and grip on the finish. As it airs out and warms up, the fruit becomes far more expressive, too, and it is rather delicious in its own right. Right in line with what Argyros has been doing with this bottling of late, this is one of the island’s best intersections of price and quality for the monovarietal Assyrtiko (some of the blends can be equally good or better deals). Don’t be scared of the screw cap. This delivers. Drink now-2021.
