Notes of dried cherries with dark licorice, cocoa, dried violets and wet earth. Medium-bodied with chalky tannins. Polished and velvety with a slightly austere finish. Try after 2026.

The 2019 Barolo Gattera is attractive, but surprisingly also a bit forward. Sweet dried red cherry, mint, crushed flowers, spice and incense lend quite a bit of aromatic complexity. I find the flavors a bit developed through. For that reason, I would prefer to drink this on the younger side.

• 100% Nebbiolo. • Calcareous-clay soils. • Elevation: 250m above sea level 40-50% slope gradient. • Vineyard planted in 1960. • Fermentation with indigenous yeasts, 7-8 days maceration in rotofermentor. • Malolactic fermentation takes place in French barrique. • Aging in 15hl barrels of Slavonian oak for 24 months prior to bottling, followed by 12 months in bottle.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is not necessarily a particularly easy grape to cultivate. Indeed, its very late ripening time often means that yield is very low, and they are also quite susceptible to various diseases and forms of rot. However, in their native Italy and in many other countries around the world, wineries persevere with this varietal due to the fact that few other grapes can produce wines as wonderful, complex and flavorful as those made with the Nebbiolo grape. These grapes offer a beautifully pale red juice, packed full of intense flavors such as truffle, violet and prune, making them a real treat for serious wine drinkers looking for a sensory experience not to be forgotten. They are also renowned for their affinity for aging, which allows their strong tannins to mellow and compliment their stunning flavor.

Situated in the north-western part of Italy, the region of Piedmont is known worldwide and is highly respected for the quality of the wines produced there. Many of the most successful sub-regions in Piedmont produce many of the world's finest red wines, such as those made from the excellent Nebbiolo grape varietal in areas such as Barolo and Barbaresco. However, the historic wineries which typify this region use a relatively wide variety of grapes, including Dolcetto and Barbera for their red wines, which are typically aged and have a delightful velvety character. Piedmont isn't all about beautifully complex red wines, though, as it is also famed for high quality, elegant sparkling wines, notably the Asti wines made with the white Moscato grape. The region benefits from a range of terroirs which are often well expressed in the sparkling wines, and a wonderfully consistent climate ideal for vineyard cultivation.
