A lovely blend of Merlot and Refosco, the Bastianich 2015 Vespa Rosso is a beautifully layered and generous wine that starts off with ripe cherry and blackberry and segues to spice, campfire ash and baker's chocolate. There are subtle touches of both the sweet and the savory, and the wine is grounded and balanced at its core. This is a mid-weight red with soft tannins and a solid sense of balance. Bright deep ruby-red. Perfumed, fresh red/dark berries, herbs and spices on the enticing nose. Then similar flavors to the aromas, but with a splash of minerals that increases this wine's complexity. Finishes long, fleshy and savory. Lots to like here, especially the light on its feet quality for such a big powerful wine. Well done.

This is always a very serious red for the money, and 2015 could be one of the most exciting editions. Sesame seeds are dispersed among brambleberries and fields of bright blueberries and lavender. Full-bodied and fine but juicy. Grainy tannins dive deep into the vibrant dark fruit, buffing it with care to gleam brightly on the finish. Drink now.

Region: Friuli-Venezia Giulia

The special region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northern Italy has a long history of producing exceptional white wines in its beautifully mountainous vineyards. Situated between the stunning Italian Alps and the wild Adriatic sea, Friuli-Venezia Giulia's wineries are dedicated to capturing the alpine essence of their wonderful terroir, and the finest wines of the region are famed for their alpine freshness, full of notes of clear mountain waters and lush, green grasses. Because Friuli-Venezia Giulia is so close to the Italian border with Slovenia and Austria, it is normal to find wineries working with grape varietals not normally associated with Italian wines. However, the Riesling wines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia are undoubtedly amongst the finest in Europe, and French varietals such as Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir also grow very well there alongside some of Italy's best Pinot Grigio vines.
