Bernadot is in the upper part of Treiso, over 400 metres above sea level, essentially continuing the strip of Nervo vineyards. Altitude and a cool vintage such as 2018 could not be an easy combination. The wine has a peppery, restrained red berry aroma, with a relatively light body. Silky tannins and mouth-puckering acidity define the tense and savoury palate. It won't be a high-flying example but will develop more complexity with ageing. Drinking Window 2021 - 2028.

The 2018 Barbaresco Bernardot comes across as relatively quiet in this vintage, but that is the personality of the year. There is good depth and creaminess, and yet the volume is very much dialed down. Dark cherry, spice, leather and mint build into the understated finish.

Well defined cherry, licorice, soy and tar aromas and flavors mark this fresh and balanced red. Dense, with tar and earth notes echoing on the long finish. Best from 2024 through 2036. 50 cases imported.

Rated 92 - This 2018 Ceretto Barbaresco Bernadot reflects the fresher 2018 vintage. The nose has some green herb notes and an irony, mineral quality at first but on standing it develops notes of cinnamon spice, strawberries and fresh earth. It is very elegant and understated, perhaps lacking some mid-palate weight but is very elegantly put together with grippy, fine tannins on the finish and refreshing acidity. It is approachable now, but will last for at least 15 years. - The Wine Independent

Sweet berries and cherries with some citrus and black cherry. Medium body with soft tannins that are a little dusty and textured. Berry and cedar with some milk-chocolate flake. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The name 'Nebbiolo' means 'fog' in Italian, and there is some debate as to the origin of this unusual name. However, many people claim it has something to do with the milky white dust which covers these dark, round grapes as they begin to reach maturity. The Nebbiolo grapes are most renowned for their inclusion in the finest wines of Italy, where they are allowed to age and mellow their strong tannins, producing wonderfully complex wines packed with dense, interesting flavors Most commonly, Nebbiolo wines hold beautiful tones of truffle, violet and prunes, and are highly aromatic and mellow on the palate. Their popularity and fame has helped them become established in several New World countries, where they continue to seduce and fascinate wine drinkers looking for an elegant, sophisticated wine which packs in plenty of wonderful flavors

Region: Piedmont

For hundreds of years, the beautiful alpine region of Piedmont in north-west Italy has been producing excellent quality red wines, and some of the most characterful sparkling white wines to have ever come out of the Old World. The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.

Country: Italy

For several decades in the mid to late twentieth century, Italy's reputation for quality wines took a fairly serious blow. This was brought about partly due to lack of regulation in certain regions, and too much regulation in others. This led to several wineries in the beautiful and highly fertile region of Tuscany making the bold move to work outside of the law, which they saw as responsible for the drop in quality in Tuscan wines. They believed that they had the expertise and the generations of experience necessary with which to make truly excellent, world class wines, and set about doing just that. These 'Super Tuscans', as they came to be known, quickly inspired the rest of Italy to improve their produce, and now, Italian wine producers in the twenty-first century are widely recognised to be amongst the best in the world. Regulation and law began to change, and wine drinkers across the globe woke up to the outstanding wines coming out of Italy, which are continuing to improve and impress to this day.
