Deep garnet. Highly perfumed aromas of raspberry and cherry preserves, candied flowers, mocha and incense are enlivened by a smoky mineral flourish. Alluringly sweet and incisive, offering vibrant, densely packed red fruit preserve, cherry cola, candied lavender and spicecake flavors that deepen steadily with aeration. Shows superb detail and minerally thrust on a strikingly long, seamless finish that features polished tannins and lingering five-spice powder and floral notes. In spite of a hint of charcoal, this is a very deep and charming wine with an entire microcosm of spice on the powerful yet refined palate. Staggering concentration without being in the least domineering. Very long, polished finish with so many subtle meaty and savory nuances. Drink or hold.

A finished blend but still in tank at the time of my visit (this new cuvée spends 18 months in oak and then 18 months in tank prior to bottling), the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape le Plateau comes from selected parcels of galets roulés on the plateau of Mont Redon. The blend is 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah, and the result is a top-notch effort, boasting explosive aromas of cherries, cocoa and baking spices. Full-bodied, silky, rich and long, it's buttressed by the structural elements of the oak, without being swamped by wood at all.

Densely packed, with the ripe, vivid dark fruit that is the hallmark of the vintage, as plum, blackberry, black currant and fig notes course through, carried by a deeply embedded graphite spine. Warm ganache, singed tobacco, Turkish coffee and roasted alder elements hang in the background. Offers a long, rich finish. Really well-built. Best from 2022 through 2040. 13 cases imported.

Even better, the 2016 Châteauneuf Du Pape Le Plateau is a blockbuster in the making and is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah sourced all from the upper Mont Redon plateau. Awesome notes of crème de cassis, graphite, toasted bread, garrigue, and beautiful minerality give way to a concentrated, full-bodied Châteauneuf Du Pape that shines on all accounts. It’s concentrated and backward, so give bottles 4-6 years. It’s going to have 20-30 years of overall longevity.

Region: Rhone Valley

There are few wine regions in the world with a history as long and illustrious as that of the Rhone Valley in France. For over two thousand years, wines have been produced in this region, benefited by the excellent, mineral-rich soils of the region, and the varied climate which allows a wide range of grape varietals to grow. The Rhone Valley is now split into two quite separate regions, with the north part being characterized by its cooler, continental climate and the limited number of grape varietals grown, and the southern sub-region being perfect for growing a wide range of grapes, and producing an exciting number of different wine styles. The Rhone Valley is associated with elegant, flavorful wines, and certain grape varietals such as Viognier and Syrah, which are adept at expressing the finer features of their terroir.
