The 2016 Rauzan Gassies is powerful and dense, but also a touch rustic and rough around the edges. Smoke, leather, tobacco and grilled herbs make up the distinctive flavor signatures, and the wine offers good depth in the glass, although some hard contours remain. There is plenty to look forward to, even if the tannins are a bit forbidding today.

The 2016 Château Rauzan-Gassies is another terrific Margaux that has the classic elegance and purity of the vintage front and center. Its medium ruby color is followed by complex spring flowers, bay leaf, mint, and black raspberries. It’s medium-bodied, has a silky, elegant texture, fine tannins, and is undeniably a beautiful wine. Drink it over the coming 15-20 years.

This is less intense than some, but then one of the pleasures of Rauzan Gassies is that it takes a less obvious route. Sweet damson aromas are appealing and seductive. I like the lift on the palate, and the marked acidity has that feeling of almost redcurrant juiciness that translates to energy rather than tartness, helped by some clear floral aromatics and earthy undertones. Good quality. Matured in 50% new oak.

Very vibrant red and dark berries with briary complexity, leading to a palate that has a smooth array of bright, fleshy red cherries and raspberries, as well as a juicy and fresh, lively finish. Try from 2021.
Wine Spectator
Features a core of cassis and cherry preserve flavors, lined with notes of mesquite and dark earth that take over a bit on the finish, leaving a cedary, slightly squared-off feel in the end, as the fruit lacks the energy to keep pace. Drink now through 2027. 6,500 cases made.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France consistently enjoys the reputation of being the finest region for wine making in the world. But what is it that makes this area around the Gironde river so special? The secret lies in their ancient and careful blend of no more than six high quality, flavorful and unique grape varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere are all permitted for usage in the production of Bordeaux wines, and the winery carefully considers how to balance the fine points of one varietal against another. Most commonly, Cabernet Sauvignon is used as the main grape varietal, usually with vintners making wines containing upwards of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon grape juices. This varietal lends its big, spicy, fruity flavors and astringent, tannin-heavy character to the mix. Normally, this strong varietal is then tempered and rounded by Merlot, a fleshy, fruity and far lighter bodied grape, containing far fewer tannins and a much brighter flavor The blended wines are normally left to age in oak, where they can continue to work together and produce their wonderful results.
