Opaque ruby. Powerful smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe red and blue fruits, olive and violet are sharpened by a smoky mineral overtone. Deeply concentrated yet lively as well, showing impressive focus and lift to the black currant, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors, which show a smooth, velvety texture. Deftly marries power and finesse and finishes impressively long and sweet, displaying repeating dark berry character and dusty tannins that sneak in late.

Flinty and smoky elements, with coal smoke, praline and boot polish, as well as red and dark plums. Impressively complex and detailed. The palate has assertive, deeply ripe and fluid tannins that drive long and carry dark plum fruits. Warming mocha to close. Drink now and beyond. (Suckling)

The 2013 Côte Rôtie Chateau D'Ampuis showed consistent with last year, offering classic, masculine notes of smoked black fruits, crushed flowers, and lots of minerality. It’s not a blockbuster but has good concentration, bright acidity, and building tannin, all suggesting 3-4 years of bottle age will be your friend.

From vines averaging 50 years of age, across seven plots yielding around 37hl/ha. This has spent 38 months in new oak barrels. The nose has very oaky aromas of liquorice, sous-bois and a touch of furniture polish. It's very broad and flowing on the palate, with sappy red berry fruits and red berry acidity. Plentiful oak influence on the finish.

The 2013 Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis spent 38 months in oak. It features subtle notes of pie crust layered over espresso, black olives and dark fruit. Medium to full-bodied, it suffers only by comparison to other recent vintages, finishing with some drying tannins.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia.
