Serra is always the more austere Serralunga Barolo from Giovanni Rosso; it deserves time and is not an easy wine. The nose is focused on earthy clay minerality, violet, dill, liquorice, dried cherry and peony. There's nice delicacy first due to graceful acidity, with elegant tannins at the fore but then a thick end, with massive sternness and an orangey character. A modern Barolo with old-fashioned typicity. ... More details

Rated 94 - Linear and focused, this opens with aromas recalling tobacco, forest floor botanical herb and graphite along with a whiff of blue flower. Aged in large French casks, the youthfully austere palate has an almost knife-like precision, exhibiting juicy raspberry, Morello cherry and crushed mint alongside a coffee bean note. Firm, tightly knit tannins provide support. Drink 2029–2044. - Kerin O’Keefe

Rated 94 by Jeb Dunnuck
The 2019 Barolo Serra has a bit more concentration in its color and offers notes of kirsch, sweet licorice, and dark mineral earth. Full-bodied, with ample rounded fruit and building structure, it is flush with raspberry coulis and flowers. Drink 2025-2045.

Very pretty with violets, black cherries, and raspberry aromas that follow through to a medium body with well-integrated tannins and a fresh and bright finish. Better in 2026.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is not necessarily a particularly easy grape to cultivate. Indeed, its very late ripening time often means that yield is very low, and they are also quite susceptible to various diseases and forms of rot. However, in their native Italy and in many other countries around the world, wineries persevere with this varietal due to the fact that few other grapes can produce wines as wonderful, complex and flavorful as those made with the Nebbiolo grape. These grapes offer a beautifully pale red juice, packed full of intense flavors such as truffle, violet and prune, making them a real treat for serious wine drinkers looking for a sensory experience not to be forgotten. They are also renowned for their affinity for aging, which allows their strong tannins to mellow and compliment their stunning flavor.

Region: Piedmont

n Italy, the region most closely associated with excellent quality red wines and characterful sparkling wines is Piedmont. This alpine region is located in the north-west of the country, and features beautiful foothills of the impressive mountain range which forms the nearby border between Italy, France and Switzerland. Wineries in Piedmont work with the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive in the warm, dry summers and cooler autumns, as well as the beautifully expressive Moscato grapes which are used for the sparkling Asti wines the region is famed for. For generations, these wineries have perfected the art of aging their red wines, and blending grape varietals to get the most out of each one, leading to a region known all over the world for the exceptional quality of its produce.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
