Here the restrained yet markedly spicy and beautifully layered nose is composed of liqueur-like red and black cherry, earth and lavender aromas. This is sleeker and more refined than the Grands Ech though the medium plus weight flavors possess no better mid-palate concentration or power. There is plenty of the hallmark minerality and I very much like the texture on the balanced, persistent and harmonious finale. A wine of class and grace that should also age for years.

Healthy bright red. Reticent aromas of small wild red berries and truffley underbrush. Rich and fine-grained, with lovely lift to the utterly seamless, deep flavors of berries and earth. Not obviously superior to the Griotte, and not at all a powerhouse, but this tightly wound wine is still youthfully tight and will need years to unfold.

Lush and fleshy for the vintage, with plenty of juicy cherry and raspberry fruit. Firmly built, this develops on the palate, leading to a long, fruit-, mineral- and spice-tinged aftertaste. Combines finesse and intensity. Best from 2019 through 2032. 20 cases imported.

Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a slightly leaner bouquet than its peers: a pleasant leafiness filtering through the red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a piquant entry. This is tarty, higher in acidity than other Clos de Bèze, with Morello cherry, crushed strawberry and minerals towards the finish. It feels a little pointed at the moment but it has the substance to age. Tasted September 2016.
Winery
A beautiful, intense ruby-red colour. Powerful but refined aromas. When the wine is young, the aromas are reminiscent of black cherry and dark chocolate. With age, they evolve towards notes of undergrowth, truffle and liquorice. After 15 years or so, the aromas of candied fruit remain but are mingled with nuances of leather and musk. Tannins provide a good structure, perfectly balanced by the velvety texture of the wine. The long aftertaste brings back the aromas of cherry and liquorice: a kaleidoscope of sensations.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

Region: Burgundy

There are few more famous wine regions in the world than Burgundy, and this special area has given much to raise the profile of fine French wines around the world. Although most commonly associated with excellent quality red wines made with the Pinot Noir varietal, this region is home to several red and white varietals and produces and impressive range of wines, from still to sparkling, dry to sweet, full bodied and aged, and from to light and drinkable. The region of Burgundy has been producing excellent wines for centuries, with much evidence to suggest that the ancient Gauls were the first to cultivate the native vines which flourish here in the warm summers, and on the excellent soil fed by local rivers. This type of heritage has led to a wine industry highly unique, deeply traditional, and with an exquisite reputation to uphold.

Country: France

Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world. With a wine making history which spans several thousand years and owes its expertise to the Romans, it comes as little surprise that this most highly esteemed of the Old World wine countries continues to impress and enchant both novices and experts to this day. Despite the rise in quality of wines from neighboring European countries, not to mention the New World, the French wine industry continues to boom, with up to eight billion bottles being produced in recent years. However, France prides itself on always putting quality before quantity, and the wide range in fine produce is a testament to the dedication and knowledge of the wineries across the country. Indeed, from rich and complex reds to light and aromatic white wines, French wines are as varied and interesting as they are enjoyable to drink, making this country a firm favorite for wine lovers across the globe.
