A youthful white, laced with buttery lemon cake, peach, vanilla and citronella aromas and flavors. Supple and harmonious, revealing an undercurrent of seashore/iodine. The superlong finish echoes all the fruit, mineral and baking spice elements. Drink now through 2036. 110 cases made, 20 cases imported.

90-92 The 2021 Bâtard-Montrachet Clos Poirier Grand Cru exhibits aromas of pear, confit citrus, fresh mint and toasty new oak. Full-bodied, satiny and textural, it's rich and enveloping, with a fleshy, open-knit core and a nutty, barrel-inflected finish.

Moderate reduction is enough to blur the nuances of the white orchard fruit. On the palate it's immediately clear that the medium weight flavors don't possess the same incredible density that many of the wines in the range possess though I underscore that they are by no means dilute, only less concentrated while delivering good if not special depth and persistence on the almost aggressively lemony and bone-dry finale. This is pretty enough but I suspect that the austerity and borderline aggressive citrus character of the finish may be more than some might appreciate.

Varietal: Chardonnay

There are few white wine grape varietals as famous or widely appreciated as the Chardonnay, and with good reason. This highly flexible and adaptable grape quickly became a favorite of wineries due to its fairly neutral character. This neutrality allows the wineries to really show off what they are capable of doing, by allowing features of their terroir or aging process to come forward in the bottle. As well as this, most high quality wineries which produce Chardonnay wines take great efforts to induce what is known as malolactic fermentation, which is the conversion of tart malic acids in the grapes to creamy, buttery lactic acids associated with fine Chardonnay. Whilst the popularity of Chardonnay wines has fluctuated quite a considerable amount over the past few decades, it seems the grape varietal allows enough experimentation and versatility for it always to make a successful comeback.

However, it isn't all about white wine in Cote De Beaune, as the area also produces vast amounts of characterful and interesting red wines, predominantly made from the Pinot Noir grape. Cote De Beaune Pinot Noir tends to be lighter and fruitier than others, and absolutely delicious.
