Rated 97 - The 2019 Massolino Barbaresco Albesani is the Massolino family's first release Barbaresco and what a debut this is! The 2019 Albesani has hints of smoke and rose on the nose, and if the wine is allowed to stand for a while, notes of ripe red fruits, wild strawberries and rose petal come and go. The texture is seductive and seamless and flows effortlessly across the palate, and then there is the little full stop of superfine, compact, chalky tannins. This wine has lovely weight and balance and a sapid, savory finish. It is one of the best Barbaresco 2019s I have tasted from this vintage. The Albesani vineyard is in Nieve with a south-west aspect at 230 meters above sea level on a clayey, marl and limestone soil so it has all the potential ingredients to make a wonderfully expressive Barbaresco and in this wine it certainly does! Keep three to four years, but it will drink well for 30. - The Wine Independent ... More details

From one of the most celebrated vineyard sites in the denomination, this opens with aromas of camphor, iris, pipe tobacco and wild berry. Showing structure and elegance, the focused palate delivers juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry, cake spice and aniseed framed in firm, refined tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Drink 2025–2034. (Cellar Selection)

Massolino has added a few terrific new Barbarescos to its lineup. The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani is one of these. With fruit from a 0.6-hectare growing site at a warm 230 meters in elevation, the wine shows broad knitting and dark fruit nuances of blackcurrant and cherry. There is spice, toast and mineral at the back. This is a 4,000-bottle production.

The 2019 Barbaresco Albesani captures all the breadth and resonance that is such a signature of this famous hillside site in Neive. Red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal, lavender, menthol and licorice build with a bit of time in the glass. Bright acids and lively tannins add energy to this super-classic, inviting Barbaresco from Massolino. The 2019 is a dream, not to mention a superb debut.

A tight and concentrated Barbaresco with racy strawberries, orange zest and hints of sweet spices. Medium to full body with tightly wound tannins that slowly build on the palate to a crescendo. Long, tight but also seamless tannins. Pretty eclectic in style showing clarity, fine austerity and just a hint of plushness. Drink or hold.

This lean, taut red leads with a whiff of vanilla, followed by cherry, currant and cranberry flavors accented by earth and wild herbs. Delivers a dense matrix of dusty tannins. The debut vintage for this MGA from Massolino. Best from 2026 through 2040. 650 cases made, 100 cases imported.

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. The grapes also lend a beautifully pale red color to their wines, which helped secure their place as some of the finest and most elegant to be found anywhere on earth.

Region: Piedmont

n Italy, the region most closely associated with excellent quality red wines and characterful sparkling wines is Piedmont. This alpine region is located in the north-west of the country, and features beautiful foothills of the impressive mountain range which forms the nearby border between Italy, France and Switzerland. Wineries in Piedmont work with the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive in the warm, dry summers and cooler autumns, as well as the beautifully expressive Moscato grapes which are used for the sparkling Asti wines the region is famed for. For generations, these wineries have perfected the art of aging their red wines, and blending grape varietals to get the most out of each one, leading to a region known all over the world for the exceptional quality of its produce.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
