The one white produced at Mendel, the 2017 Semillon is sourced from 70-year-old vines in Paraje Altamira at 1,100 meters in altitude. 2017 saw lower yields because of a late frost, and the vintage produced concentrated, aromatic grapes that give freshness to the wine, with citrus and floral aromas. The whole clusters were pressed, and 15% of the volume fermented in French oak barrels and then matured in those barrels for six months; the rest of the wine fermented in stainless steel and was kept there until it was blended and bottled in September 2017. Sémillon and Chenin Blanc were riper in 2017 compared to 2016, which was a very rainy vintage when these varieties had some issues with ripening properly. In years like this, Roberto de la Mota likes to ferment with indigenous yeasts, because there is no need to add any yeasts. He also likes to do an oxidative vinification to stabilize the wine and uses very low sulfur. The wine comes through as very balanced—on both the nose and palate—clean, integrated, faintly balsamic and with very good intensity while keeping the freshness. Varietal: Semillon

Semillon grapes have been grown in the Old and New Worlds for several centuries, and were at one point probably the most widely grown grape in the world. Indeed, in the 19th century, over 90% of South Africa's vineyards were used for growing Semillon grapes, most probably due to the fact that Semillon vines are hardy and produce high yields of reliable quality, as well as being highly resistant to disease. The golden skinned grapes of Semillon vines are used to produce a wide range of wines, from dry, crisp and citrus flavored bottles, to sweeter, softer and more rounded examples, all of which are highly popular across the globe. They thrive in a wide range of climates, and their flavor often depends on how much sunshine and heat they are exposed to, given wineries a great opportunity to experiment with the flavors and aromas they get from the Semillon grapes they grow.

Region: Cuyo

The historic mountainous region of Cuyo in central-west Argentina, remains the nation's key wine producing area to this day, producing over eighty percent of the country's wines. Argentinian wines have gone from strength to strength over the past few decades, and it is undoubtedly the region of Cuyo which produces Argentina's most characterful and representative wines. Cuyo's dry and arid soil, rich in iron and other minerals has proven to be an ideal environment for the cultivation of Malbec grapes, alongside several other varietals which thrive in the hot climate and reach full ripeness each autumn, expressing their fruit-forward character. The vineyards of Cuyo are fed by the great Desaguadero River and its tributaries, helped by the extensive irrigation projects which have been undertaken over the past century.
