The so-called ‘Baby Grange’, Bin 389 is a Penfolds icon and a peerless example of the traditional Aussie blend. It's matured for 12 months in American oak, partly in previous-vintage Grange casks. Behind the youthful ruby hue lies a terrific red whose gently smoky, spicy cedar and liquorice aromas are highly perfumed and intense. On the palate it shows a promising youthful vigour in its richly concentrated, opulent cassis and blackberry fruit. It has a fine, smooth texture, with chocolatey depth, good complexity and spice aplenty, all supported by a fine spine of damson acidity and the sinewy tannin structure that awaits instructions to settle down. One for bollito misto and salsa verde.

The 2016 Cabernet Shiraz Bin 389 (51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Shiraz) is a more reserved, concentrated effort that speaks more to potential at this point, even if it offers ample pleasure. Blackcurrants, smoked herbs, chocolate, and tobacco leaf notes all emerge from this very classic, medium to full-bodied, balanced beauty that I suspect will be at its best in 2-4 years and keep for a decade or more.

Balance of the sweet (cabernet) and the savory (shiraz). Possesses what has now often been referred to as a black forest cake 2016 vintage flavor profile. Darker fruits – closer to that of a black cherry liqueur than a crème de cassis. The structure of Cabernet Sauvignon aligned with the richness of Shiraz. Blackberries, savory herbs, licorice, cassis this wine’s youthful profile is tempered by softened and even tannins – from start to finish. And the judicious use of new oak.

The region itself is split into six key sub-regions, Barossa Zone, Far North Zone, The Fleurieu Zone, Mount Lofty Ranges Zone and the Limestone Coast Zone. All have a range of climatic conditions within them, and as such, produce a wide variety of wine types and styles using a range of different grape varietals. South Australia holds the country's oldest wineries, with a viticultural history which dates back to the mid 19th century, when the country was first being properly established. Early settlers noticed that, with the help of some irrigation, the higher altitude areas of the region and the valley sides were ideal for vineyard cultivation. Today, the region produces an enormous amount of wine, including Australia's famous Shiraz and Chardonnay examples, which are enjoyed all over the world.

Combine this with the experimental and daring approach Australian wineries have in regards to wine production, and it becomes clear why Australia has relatively quickly become something of a world leader when it come to exporting their produce to Europe and America. The Shiraz and Chardonnay grape varietals have produced the most successful and broadly appreciated results over the decades, however, in more recent years wineries have begun experimenting with a much wider range of grape varietals, demonstrating how Australian wineries are continuing to adapt and develop alongside international palates.
