Made with 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Malbec, this had a 100% wild ferment with 100% whole berry and was matured in French oak for 17 months (66% new). The 2019 season in Margaret River was cool and wet (in a good, balanced way), and it produced wines of presence, poise, detail and nuance. The only problem with 2019 as a vintage here was its proximity to the great 2018. However, the beauty of a year like 2019 is its ability to satisfy the drinkers who prefer cooler seasons. It's all mood-related for me, and on some days, a cool-season wine is preferred to a powerful one, and vice versa. No right or wrong. The low-yielding 2019 vintage is the first time the Tom Cullity wine did not include any percentage of Petit Verdot (previously, anything from 1% to 4.5% has made it into the blend). So, to the wine. On the nose, the 2019 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon Malbec is brooding and dark, with layers of blackberry, resin, chewing tobacco, nori, saltbush, togarashi spice (nori, Valencia orange peel, cayenne pepper, sesame, ginger, poppy seed, white pepper) and licorice root grace the aromatics. Elegant but commands presence, with juicy black cherry, blackberry and blueberry flavors, plus savory Kalamata olive, dried rosemary and bay leaf notes. Reveals accents of cigar box and salted black licorice that linger on the velvety, harmonious finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Drink now through 2035. 900 cases made, 60 cases imported.

Appearance: Ruby with a purple hue. Nose: a deep perfume of wild berries reveals distinctive savoury characters, woodsy Margaret River Forest and briny ocean breeze. Intense and powerful with dried rose petal and violet paired with earthy aromas of mushrooms, the spice of fresh cedar, and linseed oil. Hints of peppermint tree leaves are complemented by enticing notes of a canelé pastry and dark chocolate. Palate: Incredibly luscious, rich fruit builds into a long, fine, powdery tannin structure. Refreshing floral notes are expressed throughout the palate with lingering blackcurrant and blackberry. Medium bodied, the complexity of ocean and nori influence pairs beautifully with notes of chocolate, leather polish and exotic spices. An elegant, palpable and clean dry finish with earthy power and wild berry custard tart rounding out this complex palate.

The region of Margaret River is a beautiful part of south west Australia, and has proven to be one of the most versatile and successful wine regions in the country. Many experts have claimed that the climatic conditions of Margaret River are remarkably similar to those found in the Bordeaux, several thousand miles away in France. As such, it should come as no surprise that many Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon thrive well there, and grow to full ripeness in the blazing sunshine, thus expressing plenty of delicious fruity flavors. Currently, Margaret River has around fifty thousand hectares under vine, and this coastal region boasts over a hundred and fifty wineries, which produce up to twenty percent of Australia's wines.

Combine this with the experimental and daring approach Australian wineries have in regards to wine production, and it becomes clear why Australia has relatively quickly become something of a world leader when it come to exporting their produce to Europe and America. The Shiraz and Chardonnay grape varietals have produced the most successful and broadly appreciated results over the decades, however, in more recent years wineries have begun experimenting with a much wider range of grape varietals, demonstrating how Australian wineries are continuing to adapt and develop alongside international palates.
