I plumped for the 2021 Kallstadter Kabinett Trocken from Koehler-Ruprecht – 10% of the price of the Roumier. German Riesling like this should be flying off shelves: taut and linear on the nose at first, it opens wonderfully with orange rind, linseed oil and litchi scents, gaining delineation with every swirl. The palate is beautifully balanced with a razor-sharp line of acidity that lends it perfect freshness. There’s real depth and a slightly honeyed finish to this Trocken, the kind of wine that you have to resist drinking too fast. Thankfully, at 11% alcohol, you can drink as much as you like with fewer consequences the following morning. ... More details

Although this is an entry level wine it is just beginning to open up. Discreet pear and quince aromas with sage, mint and parsley notes. Impressive depth on the front palate for a dry riesling with just 11% alcohol, then the crisp appley acidity comes through. That and being bone dry may make this challenging for some, but we find this full of character. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Kallstadter Riesling Kabinett trocken is clear, refined and elegant on the beautifully aromatic nose. Vinified in small and up to 60-hectoliter oak casks, this is a subtle, frisky but seriously calcareous Riesling with and intense and well-structured fruit texture and vivacious but ripe acidity that is interwoven with fine phenolic grip and stimulating, sustainable salinity. A gorgeous, still young Riesling bottled with 11.2% alcohol. Natural cork.
Winery
This village wine was made from different plots in Kallstadt including some Saumagen this year. Dry but not "bone-dry," with the rounder style of the vintage illustrated in a light and delicious Kabi.

green grapes

Varietal: Riesling

Although they originated in Germany's beautiful Rhine Valley, the Riesling grape soon spread around the world, where it thrives in many countries with a colder climate which can support this pale and unique grapes. Riesling grapes are considered one of the finest varietals on earth, capable of expressing fascinating features of the soil type they are grown on, resulting in some highly interesting wines with plenty to offer those who are looking for something different. Riesling grapes are also noted for their aromas, which tend to be highly perfumed, floral and often with smoky notes accentuating their unusual flavor Because this was always the predominant grape grown in Germany and other such countries, Riesling wineries have always been keen to experiment with its range. This has resulted in dry white wines, sparkling wines, semi sweet wines and several others, but the finest examples are usually considered to be the Riesling dessert wines. These are occasionally made with unusual processes, including the 'eiswine' method, in which the grapes are allowed to freeze in the early frosts, or by allowing the development of 'noble rot', which withers the grapes and results in some truly spectacular and unusual flavors.

Region: Pfalz

Germany's beautiful wine region of Pfalz is widely regarded as being one of the finest in the country, with a wine culture and history which stretches back to the first century A.D, when Romans brought grape varietals and their extensive knowledge of viticulture to these fertile lands. With a climate highly similar to that of Alsace, and excellent soils found throughout the region, the hundreds of wineries which operate in Pfalz have great success each year when it comes to producing unique and highly characterful wines for global consumption. The excellent climatic conditions also mean that a wide variety of grape species thrives in Pfalz, making this a fascinating region to explore and enjoy, with red and white wines of real elegance and distinction being produced for the global market.

Country: Germany

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.
