#31 TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2022. Eighteen months in old wood have left a wine that has firm tannins and rich fruit. Its concentration, from the blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca, is impressive. This powerfully expressive wine will be ready to drink from 2025.

The 2019 Grande Reserva is mostly a 60/30 blend of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, with 10% Touriga Franca, aged for 14 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14.8% alcohol. The Portal red blends have been lovely and succulent this year, wines everyone will enjoy, but they mostly also are a little soft, making me wonder if they have the wherewithal to age and improve. In the $22 price range, I might say, "Who cares?" That's not really part of my analysis in terms of whether I want to buy a red wine in that price range. At $60, that's another calculation. Here, too, there needs to be a bit more evidence of developmental abilities, but this is certainly the best structured of the red blends this issue. It has more firmness on the finish, while still seeming surprisingly soft for such a young, upper-level wine. That said, it certainly lingers more on the finish than its red-blend siblings this issue. It has some finesse and persistence to go with the big fruit. On the whole, this is a success. It needs to show more after cellaring to become a bigger one, but let's start here for the moment.

Fragrant, with hints of black licorice and crushed pine, this chewy, medium- to full-bodied red features flavors of crème de cassis, plum sauce, hot stone, orange peel and black tea. Firm, spiced finish. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca. Drink now through 2028. 1,600 cases made, 250 cases imported.

Dark cherries, plums, blackcurrants and rosemary on the nose. Full-bodied with fine tannins. Plush and balanced with a velvety texture and a fruity, delicious finish. 60% touriga nacional, 30% tinta roriz and 10% touriga franca. Drink or hold.
Winery
Concentrated in colour, with very complex aromatic profile where we can find red and black fruits, like blackberries and dark cherries. Lovely acidity on the palate, serious but round with charming tannins. The aftertaste is long and toasty. Cellaring this wine is a good decision, but we shouldn’t lose the opportunity to enjoy it right now, especially if you appreciate a serious Douro Red.

Region: Douro

The vineyards situated around the Douro river in Portugal are amongst the oldest in Europe, and the area has been used for cultivating grapevines for at least two thousand years. As such, this is a region where tradition is strong, and authenticity is key, leading to characterful wines of real quality and uniquely Portuguese flavors. Although the region is most commonly known for its delicious and aromatic fortified wines, wineries and vintners of the Douro also make still red and white wines of great quality, using the many grape varietals which flourish there. Several red and white wine grape varietals grow extremely well in the region, thanks to the long hot summers and mild autumns the Douro enjoys, and each is used to its full potential by vintners with generations of experience and expertise.

Country: Portugal

Most of us are quick to associate Portugal primarily with the excellent fortified wines which come out of the Porto area, but there is much more to Portuguese viticulture than just this. Perhaps the most popular still wines the country produces are the varieties from the Vinho Verde region, which uses grapes that do not achieve high doses of sugar, meaning the wines are at their best when young and full of natural, springy fruit flavors The wines of the Douro region have undergone many transformations in their flavor and character over the centuries; once regarded as a bitter wine, the exporters experimented with fortifying the wine with brandy. After several centuries, vintners found a balance in the modern age which is at once reminiscent of Port wine, yet with the structure and character closer to other fine Portuguese wines. Thanks to the appellation system of Portugal and the strict laws governing wine production, Portuguese wines continue to maintain their reputation for quality and the distinctive characteristics they carry.
