The 2015 Vintage Port Quinta do Vesuvio is a blend of Touriga Nacional 60%, Touriga Franca 30% and Sousão 10%. It comes in at 113 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is beautifully balanced, but still a "wow" because of its terrific fruit. It is packed with luscious and intensely flavorful fruit, laced with some dark plum and baked cherry nuances. The concentration is good—not exceptional, perhaps, but it shows fine precision on the delicious finish, too. As is the case with most 2015s, it is also rather elegant and very fresh, the fruit lifted and well defined, never sloppy. It tightens noticeably with air, proving that its backbone can't be discounted. It should age very well but be approachable a bit on the younger side, too. It could certainly use time in the cellar, the more the better if you like complexity, but it should be in fairly decent shape around 2030 or so. I personally would like to leave it another 10 years beyond that, but that's up to you. If you insist on diving in sooner, that's also up to you (and if you twist my arm, I will confess that the fruit is very attractive, perhaps even irresistible just now). This is one of the most intriguing Symington 2015s, perhaps my personal pick of the litter (although there are some competitors). It has some upside potential, too. If it never achieves more, it will still have you oohing and aahing throughout its useful life. This has been released. There were 11,400 bottles produced, plus some large-format offerings. ... From a magnificent property in the Douro Superior, picked relatively late after the rain: rich and heady on the nose with ripe blackberry jam fruit and a touch of aromatic esteva (gum cistus); opulent palate, sun-drenched fruit backed by big, ripe velvety tannins and a tannic finish. Full, round and satisfying; weight and finesse. 1,000 cases made

Full of ripe fruit, this wine is rich while also having a delicately perfumed character. With its spice, generous fruits and sense of poise, it will age well. Drink from 2027. (Cellar Selection)

This vast quinta has 329 acres of vines spread over 806 acres on the winding left bank of the Douro. This complex, steep terrain allows for significant variations in exposures and altitude, which may be a key to the estate’s success in the 2015 vintage. Deep purple in color, richly concentrated in fruit, this wine seemed like a Graham’s when we tasted it blind (both are made by Charles Symington). The supple dark-chocolate savor of the tannins and the powerful black-skinned blueberry flavors are, in fact, a bit drier than the Graham’s 2015 Stone Terraces (also recommended here), though no less grand.

Expressive, with plum, blackberry and blueberry paste flavors that have a juicy edge along with lively licorice snap and suave dark chocolate notes. Lots of plum skin and cobbler details fill in on the finish. Best from 2030 through 2040. 950 cases made.

Region: Porto

The ancient city of Porto, capital of Portugal, has a wine history which stretches back over the millennia, and helped shape the world of wines as we know it today. Sailors and explorers leaving Porto helped introduce grapevines to the New World in the 16th century, and thanks to the vast variety of vines which grow around Porto, they had plenty of varietals to choose from. Indeed, over a hundred grape varietals are permitted by law for use in Porto's famous Port wines, although only five are commonly grown and processed in the impressive and historic Port wineries. The Douro river valley which Porto's finest vineyards are situated in is in fact one of the oldest protected wine regions in the world, and thanks to its mineral rich soils and wonderful climate, is widely regarded as one of the world's most ideal locations for viticulture.

Country: Portugal

One of the oldest regions of Portugal for wine production and vine cultivation is the Bairrada, the lush and clay-rich region responsible for an impressive range of red, white and rosé wines of exceptional quality. As with much of the country, this region benefits from long, hot summers, allowing the grapes to ripen to full maturity and thus carry a wide range of flavors and aromas. However, each region of Portugal produces wines which reach a high level of quality, from the more urbanized regions around Lisbon and Porto, where the famous fortified and Colares wines originate, to the island of Madeira and the Dao river valley, which each have their own distinctive wine cultures. The several thousand years of viticultural history in Portugal has allowed Portuguese wineries to master their own traditional techniques, which are still employed to this day across the country, yielding excellent results for the world to enjoy.
