Youthful purple. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes fresh red and blue fruit, floral, exotic spice, licorice, cola and olive scents, along with building mineral and espresso nuances. Stains the palate with alluringly sweet, spice-laced black currant, boysenberry, cherry preserve and fruitcake flavors that show wonderful delineation and mineral lift. The endless, mineral-dominated finish emphatically echoes the blue fruit and floral notes and delivers smooth, steadily building tannins. I also had the chance to re-taste the 2015 version of this wine, which I wrote up last year, and while it's still, predictably, a fetus, it clearly has enormous potential, with the depth, power and tannic structure to ensure a long life. Claire Darnaud and Jacques Grange say that it shouldn't be touched for at least another seven or eight years, preferably longer. This one is definitely at the same quality level, if a bit less forbidding in character. ... More details

Showing a little blond oak on the nose, there's wood apparent but it's not oaky per se. Good weight, and fresh with exceptionally fine tannin. Seamless, very well balanced and extremely elegant - almost too elegant for Hermitage! Reflective of the 2016 vintage in its measured freshness and classicism. Will always be light in tannin, great precision and balance however. This is delicious, and most will no doubt be drunk early as a result. And why not, it's certainly drinkable now - and with great pleasure - but it could show itself to be a really special wine with more time in bottle.

Whiffs of pencil lead and fur accent flavors of raspberry preserves and violet pastilles in this perfumed Syrah. Only 167 cases were produced. An apt expression of the 2016 vintage, it's fleshy yet spry and mineral. Sourced from a single high-altitude site, Les Grandes Vignes, at the peak of Hermitage, it's a creamy, textured red. The cutting, salty finish is just starting to open and will likely reward beyond 2050. (Editors' Choice)

From a balanced, classic vintage for Hermitage, the 2016 Hermitage Les Grandes Vignes is similarly ruby/plum-hued, with impressive red and black fruits as well as bacon fat, saddle leather, subtle smoke, and peppery herb-like nuances. This meaty, smoky, classic Hermitage is medium to full-bodied and beautifully balanced, with ripe tannins and a great, great finish.

The 2016 Hermitage Ligne de Crete Les Grandes Vignes is more approachable than the 2015, offering up notes of violets, blueberries, peppered meat and black olives. It's medium to full-bodied, ripe and velvety-textured—perhaps a bit open-knit for truly long-term aging—but open enough to enjoy now and over the next decade or so. Notes of crushed stone and menthol mark the intense, lingering finish.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.
