Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Beerenauslese an Eiswein-like aura. At the same time, impression of honeydew melon liqueur, Chartreuse-like herbal essence, white peach nectar, quince jelly, and white raisin on a viscous, expansive palate bespeak both the Ruwer and rare purity of botrytis. Energy conveyed by fresh citrus and a sense of insistent pungency - reinforced by a bite of fresh ginger - are ideal foils for the ennobled, rich side of this radiant Riesling, collaborating in surprising harmony for a multi-layered, vibratory finish. Given the unusual extent - among nobly sweet 2010s - to which the pieces here already fit together friction-free, I foresee a good four decades of delightful, thoughtful sipping. Unlike this year's Auslesen, incidentally, this wine - along with its T.B.A. and Eiswein siblings - was vinified in a small tank, in this instance netting 130 half bottles.

Vintage: 2010

2010 saw extremely high quality viticulture in many parts of the world, with an exceptionally long and hot summer providing huge benefits for wineries across many countries, especially in the southern hemisphere. The northern hemisphere and Europe saw something of a cooler summer and flowering period, but this was by no means as disastrous as it could have been. France, especially, had a fantastic year in 2010, with the world renowned Burgundy region proclaiming that their white wines of this year are ones to look out for, and despite yields being relatively small across much of the country, the quality was exceptionally high. Spain, too, received some cooler weather, but Rioja and the rest of central Spain are hailing 2010 as a very good year indeed, again as a result of smaller, finer yields. California also received similar climatic conditions, but again, wineries are highly positive about the overall effect this had on their produce, as the slightly challenging conditions resulted in smaller yields of much elegance and distinction. 2010 was really Australia's year, and in South Australia and across the Mornington Peninsula, Chardonnay vines produced good yields with a lower sugar level than in previous years. As such, the majority of South Australian white wines from 2010 are superb, and packed full of character. Shiraz also had a great year, and most Australian wineries have been proclaiming 2010 one of the great vintages. Both the Argentinian and Chilean wine industries benefited from some ideal climatic conditions this year, and are reportedly ecstatically pleased with the fact that their 2010 wines ended up with lower alcohol levels, and were beautifully balanced wines packed full of flavor.

Country: Germany

Much has changed over the past few decades in regards to German wine. Long gone are the days of mass produced, sickly sweet white wines which were once the chief exports of this fascinating and ancient wine producing country, and they have been replaced with something far more sophisticated. Whilst Germany continues to produce a relatively large amount of dessert wine, the wineries of the south of the country have reverted their attention to the production of drier, more elegant wines which really make the most of the fine grape varieties which flourish there. Many of the wineries dealing primarily with the excellent Riesling grapes have produced some truly exceptional dry and semi-sweet wines over the past few years, and it seems the world has finally woken up and noticed the extremely high quality of the distinctive produce coming out of Germany today.
