These back-to-back vintages, 2015 and 2016, deliver knockout performances. The Ceretto 2016 Barolo Bricco Rocche has always been one of the benchmark wines in this revered portfolio. It offers a lovely bouquet that explores some of the more nuanced sides of Nebbiolo that veer into the realms of rose, ash, tar and smoke. These pretty little details frame a solid core of berry fruit, cassis and dried cherry. One of the most distinctive aspects of this wine is the mouthfeel, which manages to impart its power and length without subtracting from its profound elegance. The smallest MGA, with only 1ha of vines, Bricco Rocche is a monopole of the Ceretto family and was first crafted as a single cru in 1982. Sitting at the top of the hill, it is bathed in sun throughout the day. Pretty and fragrant, the nose is redolent of classic rose accents along with spice, mint and hints of tar. Quite rich and sumptuous on the palate with fleshy fruit reined in by sneaky tannins, this remains graceful in its execution, displaying exceptional inner-mouth perfume and a tangy, sappy finish. Ceretto's 2016 Bricco Roche is creamy, ample and wonderfully inviting, especially for a young wine. Silky tannins and plush fruit meld so well with the wine's mid-weight structure. Sweet rose petal, red berry, mint, blood orange and cedar are some of the many notes that open up with a bit of air. The 2016 captures all the elegance and finesse that are such signatures of this Castilgione Falletto site.

This is an understated, subtle Barolo, framing rose-water, preserved lemons and orange peel, against a backdrop of fresh coriander and parsley. Medium-to full-bodied with finely grained tannins and driving acidity, which carries this long. Integrated, linear and polished. Drink from 2024.

A kiss of vanilla adds sweetness to the cherry, strawberry and mineral flavors in this racy red, which is supple and fluid, with polished tannins providing support. Graceful, this is all about finesse without sacrificing the structure. Best from 2023 through 2043. 50 cases imported.

In some respects harmonic and delicate, in others robust and vigorous, it is a wine with complexity, elegance and austerity. Just a few months after bottling it reveals its greatness, which gradually increases as the floral aromas of youth give way to ethereal aromas of spices, chocolate and truffles.

However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.
