Veuve Clicquot's prestige cuvée is named after the widow Clicquot, the great lady who built up the house in the early 19th century. This latest incarnation is just showing signs of ripe toasty maturity. It is rich and soft with a high dosage, in the house style, with a full panoply of lime, red apple and apricot. Drink now and until 2022.

A waft of spring blossom draws you into this elegant Champagne, whose subtle notes of poached quince, toasted brioche and mandarin orange gracefully ride the satiny mousse, supported by a vibrant backbone of acidity. Disgorged February 2016. Drink now through 2029.

The palate delivers cherry fruit flavors with spiced pastry in a fluid, open-knit and mellow mode. Builds toasty grilled hazelnut flavors into the finish. Drink now.

The last in the sequence of Grandes Dames with a healthy slug of Chardonnay (47% in 2006), this is the child of a capricious and somewhat tricky vintage, the summer marked by an early heatwave but then a rainy August. You may not think so when you taste, as this is a very confident and complex wine, well named indeed, as an inherent feminine charm starts to show its pedigree with a little age. Splashes of almond, quince and beeswax pay their compliments to the structure, discreet vinosity starting to intervene, marked by notes of gingerbread and verbena. Toasty notes and a generous finish give a nod to the warmer months of the season and the result, still engagingly primary, is nonetheless opulent indeed.

To the eye, La Grande Dame 2006 presents a color with bright, golden glints. The initial nose reveals a strong, aerial and delicate attack. Once opened, the wine has notes of dried fruits (almonds, figs, apricots), ripe white fruits (pears) and finishes on subtle toasted notes of hazelnut and praline. These pastry notes create a perfect balance with the freshness and clarity of the blend. The attack in the mouth is strong and clean. La Grande Dame 2006 has a silky texture on young fruits, supported by citrus and notes of red fruits (cherry). The Pinot Noir is extraordinarily distinguished by its freshness, minerality and power. La Grande Dame 2006 is a perfect balance of complexity, structure and power. These characteristics unite to create an elegant balance of freshness and structure, highlighted by a perfect dosage (6 g/l) that resonates with the potential of this vintage.

The careful blending of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietal grapes has long been the secret to the success of the famous sparkling wines of the Champagne region. The wines of this region have gone down in history as the finest example of France's sparkling produce, and the methods of processing the grapes in this region have been imitated in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are actually seven different grape varietals allowed to be included in a Champagne sparkling wine, although grape varietals such as Pinot Blanc, Arbanne and Pinot Gris are used less and less commonly in its production.
