The Sadies’ approach is to farm and work vines as biologically as possible, and this follows through to the winery, where they work with minimal intervention wherever possible. Rondevlei vineyard was planted in 1984, and 2021 is the first single-vineyard wine from this plot. A quarter of the wine was aged in concrete egg. Greg Sherwood MW: A very serious, grown-up Chenin showing dusty granitic minerality, a hint of stony reduction but also pristine purity, white peach and green apple vibrancy, with a sophisticated finish. Beverley Blanning MW: Smoky, intense nose. Restrained and mineral, with excellent precision and beautifully savoury fruit. A super-stylish Chenin for the long term, but this is highly enjoyable now. Roger Jones: Melon, ginger syrup, gentle herbs, immense purity. Delicate white peach and nectarine peel, hints of poached Williams pear. It’s complex, layered and still evolving. ... More details

Aromas of sliced pears, green apples, dried lemon peel. Medium-bodied with supple, gentle texture. Elegant and nuanced on the palate showing lovely restraint. Oyster shell and sweet thyme. Crushed stone, too. Shining acidity. Delicious. From old vines planted in 1984. Drink or hold.

Varietal: Chenin Blanc

For centuries, the Chenin Blanc grape has been grown in its native France, and in many other countries around the world (most notably in South Africa). These green skinned grapes are revered for the fact that their high acidity makes them extremely versatile, and Chenin Blanc wines can range from the fascinating, sweet and viscous dessert wines made by allowing noble rot to develop on the fruit, to dry and crisp sparkling crémants, or simple, elegant still white wines. Their key feature is that they are considered to be a highly 'transparent' grape, allowing the features of their terroir to come through in the glass, and the fact that they can carry a beautiful range of tropical fruit flavors such as pineapple, guava and banana.

The coastal region of South Africa is one of the most prodigious and productive wine regions on earth, and one which covers a vast distance making up for most of the tip of the African continent.
