(all tempranillo, fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged for 18 months in small American oak barrels, some new and some used): Bright ruby-red. Cherry compote, vanilla, pipe tobacco and woodsmoke on the perfumed nose. Pliant and broad on entry, offering smoky red fruit, mocha, coconut and sweet chewing tobacco flavors and a touch of cracked pepper. The smoky quality returns on the juicy, nicely persistent finish, which is framed by smooth tannins. Old-school Rioja in all its American oak glory; this would be great with a strongly seasoned lamb dish or pungent cheeses, especially blues.

Raspberry and plum aromas are fresh with a hint of sharpness. This defines zesty and crisp; the acidity level is high, which is common for 2008s, but there's enough body and power to support red-berry and vanilla flavors. A cleansing, fresh finish closes things out.

With its reserved black fruit and dry, peppery tannins, this is a soft, gentle Rioja. Its earthiness will meld with braised lamb.
