A serious nose for a rosé, with some prominent oak spice, then fresh plums and nimble red berries. Full-bodied, dense and tightly wound, with a lovely phenolic structure. Yet, it remains pure. A fine touch of herbal and oak bitterness at the end, with natural, elegant acidity following through. Drinkable now, but better after 2023. ... More details

The 2021 Cotes de Provence Rose Les Clans, matured for 11 months in 600-liter barrels (new and old), derives from old vines (50-55 years of age) planted on gravel-calcareous soils. It reveals a complex, dense bouquet with aromas of vanilla, spices, peach, iodine, crushed stones, rose and raspberry, followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless palate endowed with impressive texture, racy acids and a refreshing yet long finish. It's the most complex, racy, gastronomic wine in the Château d’Esclans range.

A ripe, lightly toasty wine that is rich and full bodied. It is an impressive and powerful wine with red fruits and ripe berry flavors. Intense and concentrated, it is spicy and now ready to drink.

Rich, ripe and intense new oak influence here, with lots of spice and ripe fruit – some bruised orchard fruit too. The oak is prominent on the palate too, it’s rounded and smoky with spice and vanilla, as expected from Les Clans in previous vintages. The fruit is dulled when served too chilled, the white orchard fruit is quite quickly replaced by sweet, ripe red berry fruit. It has a very square, boxy phenolic structure and is not showing as charmingly as the 2020 – clearly showing the coolness of the 2021 vintage. It lacks the ripeness needed for the style of wine, but for someone looking for a classically oaky wine, Les Clans does a good job.

A flattering style, with incense and dried rose petal infusing a base of white peach and yellow apple. Reveals midpalate fattiness amplified by salted buttercream, while grapefruit-laced acidity brings balance. Offers a good mineral foundation. Grenache and Rolle. Drink now. 800 cases imported.
Winery
Epitomizing a sophisticated, food driven wine made from Grenache and Rolle (Vermentino), Les Clans (entirely fermented and aged in large French oak barrels) represents a particular disconnect with rosé in general as it is quite remarkable with potential to age or, if tempted, to enjoy with great pleasure sooner rather than later. This wine is both rich and exotic while being full bodied and elegant.

Region: Provence

There are few places in the world quite as evocative as Provence, and this relatively small wine region of France has become something of a world leader following centuries of high esteem and ongoing solid, reliable production of truly excellent, characterful wines. The wines from Provence are primarily rosé, made from red wine grape juices allowed a limited time in which to have contact with their skins and seeds, and are generally considered to be amongst the finest rosé wines on earth. Provence also produces big, spicy red wines, and extremely delicate, dry, crisp white wines, too. For thousands of years, the beautiful Mediterranean climate of the region has proven itself to be ideal for viticulture, and the wine industry of Provence remains as strong and consistently superb as ever.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
