The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Fay Vineyard boasts loads of black cherry and black raspberry fruit, a floral characteristic common to this terroir, a beautiful deep ruby/purple color, sweet tannin and a dramatic, lush, Margaux-like finish. This is sexy, lush, full-throttle wine to drink over the next 10-15 years.

This wine has both elegance and finesse, expressing creamy aromas of fine oak and cigar box accompanied by fresh, juicy dark fruits. Five-spice, menthol, harmonious cherry and a raspberry hint give a complex yet balanced red fruit character. Founded in 1970 and winner of the best red wine in the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, this is one of Napa’s ‘first growths’.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon FAY is a supple, sexy wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Crème de cassis, blueberry jam, licorice, cloves and mint are all pushed forward in a creamy, expressive Cabernet built on opulence, depth and resonance. I can't think of too many 2013 Cabernets that are this enjoyable right now, although the flavors are naturally intensely primary.

As the vines in this vineyard mature, the greatness of the land translates itself to the fruit in glorious fashion. This is a wine to drink while listening to Puccini's La Boheme. Luminous ripe berry perfumes seem to bloom in the glass; lush boysenberry, raspberry and dried violet notes become part of a chorus that sings seductively of Cabernet Sauvignon. A satiny core of ripe cherry on the palate has a textured finish that echoes black truffle and allspice. Marry this wine with duckling dressed in a reduced duck stock accented by black cherries, or a ragout of winter vegetables topped with mashed potatoes.

Vintage: 2012

2012 has, so far been a positive year for wineries around the world. While it may be a little too early to speak of the wines being made in the northern hemisphere, European and North American wineries have already begun reporting that their harvesting season has been generally very good, and are predicting to continue with the kind of successes they saw in 2011. However, 2012 has been something of a late year for France, due to unpredictable weather throughout the summer, and the grapes were ripening considerably later than they did in 2011 (which was, admittedly, an exceptionally early year). French wineries are claiming, though, that this could well turn out to be advantageous, as the slow ripening will allow the resulting wines to express more flavour and features of the terroir they are grown in. The southern hemisphere has seen ideal climatic conditions in most of the key wine producing countries, and Australia and New Zealand particularly had a superb year, in particular with the Bordeaux varietal grapes that grow there and which love the humidity these countries received plenty of. Also enjoying a fantastic year for weather were wineries across Argentina and Chile, with the Mendoza region claiming that 2012 will be one of their best vintages of the past decade. Similar claims are being made across the Chilean wine regions, where Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon had an especially good year. These two grape varietals also produced characterful wines on the coastal regions of South Africa this year.

Since their conception in 18th century France, Cabernet Sauvignon grapes have flourished across the Old and New Worlds and have changed the way we think about red wine forever.
