An unusual Carménère from Maipo, ‘harvested on a short rein’ as the oenologist Marcelo Retamal puts it. Violet in color, on the nose one detects blackberries, spices, fresh fruit and mint with no fear of the pyrazine typical of the varietal. Dry and acidic on the palate, juicy tannins enhance the smooth structure.
Winery
This wine has fresh aromas of spices, pepper, ripe black fruit and a mineral hint with notes of graphite. In the mouth, it is medium-bodied with intense, ripe fruit. It has a silky-smooth texture, balanced by elegant tannins and fresh acidity. It has depth and weight in the mouth, along with a very long finish. This wine can be enjoyed while still youthful, but it has sufficient structure to develop greater complexity over the next 15-20 years.

Varietal: Carmenere

Carmenere grapes thrive in moderately warm climates, and have long since spread outwards from their native France to other countries around the world. Back at home, they are included on the list of fine grape varietals allowed for inclusion in the excellent blended wines of Bordeaux, where they are prized for their strong character, deep red color and powerful flavors and aromas. Elsewhere, they are also commonly used as a blending grape, but it is becoming more usual to see single variety bottles made with this special blue grape varietal. Carmenere is famed for its unusual flavors and powerful aromas, which often include wonderful notes of leather and cherries, tobacco and chocolate. As such, it is much in demand by wineries wishing to make memorable wines with a lasting character.

Chilean wine production as we know it first arose in the country in the mid to late 19th century, when wealthy landowners and industrialists first began planting vineyards as a way of adopting some European class and style. They quickly discovered that the hot climate, sloping mountainsides and oceanic winds provided a perfect terroir for quality wines, and many of these original estates remain today in all their grandeur and beauty, still producing the wines which made the country famous.
