The 2020 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore Gricos lifts from the glass with a pretty bouquet that mixes dusty rose with crushed blackberries and a spritz of blood orange. It's silky and soothing upon the palate, with mineral-tinged black fruits and inner violet florals that form toward the close. This finishes with a crunchy tannic grip, as residual acids maintain a marvelous fresh character. While the Gricos is usually intended for more near-term appeal, I can't help but believe that the 2020 would benefit from a number of years in the cellar. ... More details

Mid-ruby in colour, this youthful blend of Venosa, Maschito and Forenza vineyards at 450 to 580 metres is fragrant with sour cherry and background wood spice. It’s attractively cherryish on first taste and approachably supple too, with medium-bodied juicy cherry nicely rounded out by oak and well supported by a lightly chewy tannic grip. It's all underpinned by a balancing savoury finish.

Firm and fresh, this tightly meshed red leads with enticing cedar and graphite notes on the nose, slowly revealing flavors of raspberry paste, loose tea leaves, singed orange peel and iron as this expands on the silky palate. Mouthwatering finish. Best from 2025 through 2030. 3,500 cases made, 1,666 cases imported.
Winery
Ruby red in color with an edge of purple. Earthy aromas of black cherry and black pepper on the nose. Elegant and floral on the palate with the graphite minerality characteristic of wines from Vulture.

Varietal: Aglianico

Aglianico grapes are typically grown in the Campania region of southern Italy, where they have been an important grape varietal since the height of the Roman empire. The Romans adored their deep garnet coloured wines, and the Aglianico grape provided a beautiful colour along with high acid levels and a strong tannin content, which made it wildly popular both then and today. Nowadays, the finest Aglianico wines are usually aged in wood to soften their strong tannins, and this process allows the grapes to reveal their complex flavours of plum and chocolate, along with plenty of pleasing dark fruit and berry aromas. Often, Aglianico grapes are blended with Bordeaux varietals to make a wonderfully balanced wine. The varietal thrives most successfully in hot and dry regions, and has a particular affinity for volcanic soils.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
