Wild berry, underbrush, tilled earth, leather and blue flower aromas shape the nose of this fragrant, stunning red. The newest Taurasi addition to the firm's already impressive line up, this is focused, terroir-driven and loaded with finesse. It delivers flavors of juicy wild cherry, crushed rasperry, blood orange, star anise and tobacco, framed in lithe, polished tannins and fresh acidity. The 2015 Taurasi Stilema is dark and animal in nature, flaunting its crushed blackberry, tobacco, savory exotic spices, ashen earth and musky herbal tones. It’s unexpectedly cool-toned and precise, with polished black fruits that envelope its burly Aglianico acidity. Notes of licorice and minerals give way to fine tannins, reminding me that this is an incredibly young Taurasi. Piero Mastroberardino seeks with this bottling to recreate a style that he remembers from his childhood, one which favors earth and spice over fruit, and demonstrates a transparency of Aglianico. I must say that it’s quite impressive, as it is quite an achievement to produce such an elegant wine in the 2015 vintage at only 13% abv. Bravo.

Enticing nose of incense-like spice and hints of dried fruit and ashy minerals. Medium-bodied with a silky tannin framework to support the intense bead of fruit. Refined. I would drink this now, but you can hold, too.

I love the shape of the bottles in this line of wines from Mastroberardino. The 2015 Taurasi Stiléma is a balanced and softly textured expression of Aglianico with ripe cherry, tobacco and grilled herb. Despite the warmth of the 2015 vintage, this wine shows some uncharacteristic elements of herb and rosemary that give the wine a more tangy and nervous personality. Try it alongside a spicy puttanesca.

This medium- to full-bodied red is abundantly aromatic, offering bay leaf, orange zest and crushed pink peppercorn accents that are enmeshed with flavors of ripe raspberry and wild strawberry fruit. Defined by a spine of mouthwatering acidity and trim tannins, this is sleek and focused through to the minerally finish. Best from 2022 through 2032. 800 cases made, 75 cases imported.

Color: Soft ruby ??red with delicate reflections, of luminous transparency. Nose: It offers complex aromas, fruity and floral nuances in harmony with spicy nuances. Bouquet with olfactory notes of cherry, plum, blackberry, caramel, tobacco, vanilla, leather and cloves. Taste: On the palate it is fresh, savory, agile, with a silky tannic texture, well balanced with all the other components. Austere and complex, with great drinkability.

Varietal: Aglianico

Aglianico varietal grapes have a long and impressive history, having been brought to the Campania region of Italy over two thousand years ago, and becoming the primary grape for the production of ancient Rome's finest wines. They were and continue to be prized for their deep dark color, and particularly their thick black skins which have a high tannin content. These tannins mean that the wine made from Aglianico grapes is ideal for aging, as time spent in oak mellows the harsher characteristics of the grape and results in fine, mellow, balanced wines bursting with complex fruit flavors Aglianico grapes also have a high acidity content, but this doesn't get in the way of the lovely plum and chocolate aromas associated with the varietal. Aglianico grapes are often blended with Bordeaux varietals, to produce wonderfully complex wines of excellent character.

Region: Campania

The beautiful region of Campania, located in the 'shin' of Italy's boot, has been an important center for viticulture and wine making for thousands of years. Indeed, archaeologists believe that wine making was happening in Campania as long ago as 1,200 BCE, making this one of the oldest wine regions on earth. By the time the Roman Empire starting expanding, Campania became the world's most important wine producing region, and the hundred or so native grape varietals which flourish in the mineral rich soils near the coast became the key ingredient in many of Rome's legendary classical wines. Today, the wine industry in Campania is booming once more, following a drop in the region's reputation in the 1970s, and is gaining awards, recognition and new fans each year.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
